Song Sparrow, Bainbridge Island, Washington

I heard a song sparrow calling in the little 100-square-feet garden in the corner of our backyard the other day. That fat, slurred chirp is quite distinctive once you’ve learned it, and helps sort them out from the other LBJs. We’ve had lots of white-crowned sparrows, and the occasional Lincoln’s, in our yard, but a song sparrow is a treat.

It’s one of the coolest things about birdwatching: there’s always another challenge. Sparrows are one of the things I’ve been working on for the last few years.
