Happy (Belated) 15th Birthday, Lies.com!

Back on February 7 lies.com passed a smallish milestone: Its 15th birthday. The first post ever on lies.com was this one, posted on February 7, 1996: So it begins.

I don’t want to do another big “reader” post summarizing the last 5 years (I’ll save that for the 20th anniversary in 2016, assuming we’re all still here). But maybe we could do this instead: Any user of the site who wants to is encouraged to comment on this item with links to one or both of the following things: Your top 5 favorite posted items from the past 5 years, and/or your top 5 favorite comments. Basically, we’re talking any post from this one until today: Iraq war dead for January 2006.

In the meantime, happy birthday, lies.com!

Update: NorthernLite nominates the following as his favorite post (stolen from Randall Munroe): Someone is WRONG on the Internet. And his favorite comment (from shcb): Just for grins I melted some aluminum and poured it out in a pan…

    Happy Birthday!

Off the top of my head one of my favourite posts was the cartoon that said something like:

“I can’t go to bed yet. Somebody is wrong on the Internet!” lol

And one of my favourite comments came from shcb just a few days ago…

“Just for grins I melted some aluminum and poured it out in a pan, I used a hunk of 6061, some painted sheet metal and some painted extrusion that was dirty and oily.”

I had a few drinks in me when I started reading it and I imagined shcb in his shed doing some science experiments just to prove that someone on the Internet was wrong!. Juts cracked me right up.

I’ve also enjoyed some of the magic and illusion postings you’ve added over the years.

This site has been in my “faves” for years and I don’t see it getting removed anytime soon.

    Again, Happy Birthday and congrats!

    Yeah, congrats. To another 15!

I am honored that your two favorites were at my expense :-) that is a great image, a slightly deranged shcb in his robe and over boots, the kind with the metal buckles, imagine Cousin Eddie on Christmas Vacation emptying his toilet. So here is ole shcb melting aluminum over a 55 gallon drum full of burning 2×4’s beer in one hand cigar in the other. So much more entertaining that a guy in slacks in a multimillion dollar state of the art 100,000+ sf manufacturing plant with a laboratory grade kiln.

To be clear I wasn’t saying the picture was one of my fave’s because I thought it depicted you. It was because it depicted me sometimes, and indeed many us here. I think that’s why it was so funny.

I didn’t even realize the connection between the comment you made the other night that made me laugh so much and the picture until I was writing the comment above!

Basically you doing that little experiement showed exactly why that cartoon is bang on funny.

I know, with any good comedy there is a certain level of truth, my wife, who I do drive nuts, wonders aloud why I spend so much time on this site and in essence I say “because they are wrong! And they are on the internet!” that’s exaggerated of course but it is exaggerated in the same sense of fun as our comments above.

In the spirit of the thread I wonder how many people really read our ranting? If JBC is still listening it there some stats available that show how many different people visit this site. You realize I’m taking the chance he will find out how much of his bandwidth I consume and the level of heartburn I cause and send me packing.

    It’s all in good fun.

    hmmmm top five…

    1) The shuttle launch, booster separation and splash down video with Boards of Canada “Dayvan Cowboy” soundtrack (another where the guy skydives from the edge of space)

    2) That guy dancing to High Pressure Days (still hilarious)

    3) NASA scientists plan to approach girl by 2018

    4) Sarah Palin (the quitter from twitter) riding a T-Rex

    5) tweenbot (I for one welcome our tweenbot overlords)

    6) pick a podcast, almost any podcast
