Northern Naturalists – Invertebrate Tracking Field Guide:

urbpan:

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: BUY THIS BOOK.

If you’ve ever seen a bump on a leaf, or found a weird cocoon, or a bunch of tiny eggs, and wanted to know what creature made them, this book is for you.

This is absolutely true. I’m a field-guide fan from way back. I own way too many field guides.

This is literally my favorite field guide ever. It is beautifully illustrated with hundreds of photographs. The text is fascinating.

It’s like having a personal Sherlock Holmes that you can ask questions of and receive precise, authoritative answers about the most obscure clues. Um, if Sherlock Holmes had devoted his life to solving insect mysteries instead of human ones.

Bugs Make Art: Photos

Entomologist Steven Kutcher is a Hollywood “Bug Guy,” serving as a consultant in movies like “Jurassic Park,” “Arachnophobia” and “James and the Giant Peach.”

In the 1980s Director Steven Spielberg needed a shot where a fly walks through ink, leaving footprints.

Kutcher began experimenting for the scene, which led to his interest in prints created by insects.

This is just too cool! Pass me the cockroaches! I have a masterpiece to crawl.

If you find this sort of thing interesting, let me recommend my favorite field guide ever: Tracks & Sign of Insects and Other Invertebrates, by Charley Eiseman and Noah Charney.

I really love this book.
