Vogue chose Lupita Nyong’o for the cover after the Oscar winner’s new film Queen of Katwe where she played a Ugandan girl who excels at the game of chess. The model and actress invited Vogue to visit her home in Kenya to show the beauty of her native home and her family. She marked the importance of returning to your roots to share where you’ve come from. Lupita told the magazine she hopes to work with directors Kathryn Bigelow or Ava DuVernay, and possibly even bring the story of social activist Assata Shakur to mainstream media.
