Tuesday, March 4th, 2014This reminds me of when I went to apply for my marriage license.
The form asked me to specify “Occupation” and “Industry.”
Like a fool I put “Dramaturg” and “Theatre.”The clerk at the San Diego records office who was reviewing my form said: ”You can’t put that under Occupation.
They will totally send this form back to me.”So I said: “But that’s what I do.
Can dramaturgs not get married in the state of California?”And after some back-and-forth, he said:
“Look, can we just say ‘director’?”And I said: “Fine.”
Then he said: “You can’t say ‘Theatre’ as your Industry.
Can we just put ‘Entertainment’?”And I took a very deep breath and said: “Fine.”
Then he got to the part of my form where it specified Highest Education Completed.
And he saw that I had a PhD.
And he looked me right in the face,
not even joking a little bit,
and he said:
“I didn’t know you needed a PhD to be an entertainment director.”
