‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’, Michel Gondry (2004)

What a loss to spend that much time with someone, only to find out that she’s a stranger.

Constantly talking isn’t necessarily communicating.

Something I love about this movie that I didn’t even notice until I heard it mentioned on the commentary track, but which then seemed super obvious: the way Joel and Clementine are cast against type. Because on paper, if you’re telling me Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are playing a wacky cut-up and a shy introvert, I’m go I to be really surprised when I find out which is which.

Hurry up and be long enough since the last time that I can watch it again.

Please let me keep this memory, just this one.

From the beginning the movie is weird and off-putting, with Carrey and Winslett playing against type, the Kaufman wackiness, the Gondry wackiness; it’s almost too much. But then comes the moment when Joel and the audience realize what’s going on. It’s like flipping a switch, and from then on it’s a ride: intense, awesome, heartbreaking, and so good.

I’m on Tumblr for one reason: To share the things I love. This movie is one of them.
