Tags: this whole exchange is so wonderful, on re-reading the books it takes on more relevance, more depth, because of who he is, and what he goes on to do, He looked at Sam Gamgee, and discovered that Sam was watching him, ...and it's like Sam's character breaks the fourth wall for a moment, steps out of his role, and sees his whole life, his whole narrative arc, with perfect clarity, and just calmly and matter-of-factly sets himself on that course, and never falters, not once, not for a second, Sam is the true hero.
