fatchance: White-winged dove (Zenaida asiatica) on organpipe…

fatchance:

White-winged dove (Zenaida asiatica) on organpipe cactus (Stenocereus thurberi), at the Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, Arizona.

These don’t normally occur in Southern California, but occasionally one will show up. Yesterday I was at a kickoff meeting for a local city councilmember’s re-election effort, standing around with a bunch of people in the backyard of a beautiful beach house. Just as the official speeches were beginning a white-winged dove flew overhead and landed about 150’ away. I didn’t have binoculars, but the diagonal white stripes on the wing were clearly visible, and I was super excited to see it; it’s the first time I’ve ever seen the bird in California.

I had a momentary impulse to interrupt the proceedings to alert everyone to this momentous event. But instead I just kept quiet about it as the speeches continued. But I had a big grin on my face.
