A Quick Note On My Thinking

extinction-illustrated:

I’m not one of those people who thinks that humans are inherently evil in the way we interact with our environment. I find it hard to view the extinction of say, the horse in the Americas as equivalent to that of the passenger pigeon. Past human activities and extinctions must always be viewed in context.

As I’ve said before, we are part of the environment. Our activities are ecological processes that are just as much a part of the system as lions hunting large ungulates or beavers building dams or fungi killing elm trees. Removing humans from the equation would also create problems in the ecosystem.

The key to putting the brake on climate change, maintaining habitats and preventing further human-mediated extinction is to understand ourselves and our activities in the wider ecological context. By making sensible decisions, we will not only help the planet, but also help ourselves.
