Hamlet roulette, 1
A couple months ago I went to a reading of a streamlined Hamlet designed to be played by 7 actors, each prepared to play any character. On Saturday night, I went to a preview performance of it with some of the spinstrs.
I’m not sure if this is how they will always do it, or if it’s because it was a preview, but instead of drawing out a character name for each actor, they drew out an entire configuration. The director said that there were 7 configurations in the skull. The one that was chosen had:
- El Beh (a young Asian-American woman) as Hamlet,
- Kevin Clarke (middle-aged white man) as the ghost and gravedigger,
- Nick Medina (young white man) as Claudius and Rosencrantz,
- Cathleen Riddley (middle-aged African-American woman) as Laertes,
- David Sinaiko (older white man) as Horatio and Ophelia,
- Megan Trout (young white woman) as Polonius, priest, and Osric, and
- Beth Wilmurt (middle-aged white woman) as Gertrude and Guildenstern.
This sounds so cool.
