good I’m not the only one w this problem

Fun fact: there’s a hidden feature in iOS 8 that lets you make the screen much dimmer than the minimum. I’m using it right now. It’s seriously hidden, though.

1. Go to: Settings: General: Accessibility: Zoom and turn on the Zoom feature.

2. Using three (3) fingers, triple-tap (yes, triple-tap) the screen. If you do it right it should pop up a weird little Zoom Settings dialog.

3. Select “Choose Filter: Low Light” in the Zoom Settings.

4. Do the three-fingers-triple-tap thing again to get out of Zoom Settings. (If you accidentally double-tap with three fingers instead of triple-tap, your screen will magnify, which is disorienting. Double-tap again with three fingers to zoom back out.)

From now on, whenever you want to go extra-dim (as when Tumblring in the wee hours while your partner tries to sleep), just turn on Zoom via Settings: General: Accessibility: Zoom and the normal brightness controls will let you dim the screen much further.

More details here.
