it is a thing though, right? did your kids go to schools where they had to say the pledge of allegiance and there were US flags in every classroom? did you? ??? ???????????????????????????? i don’t know how to express my thoughts.

Yeah, sorry for being flippant. It is a thing, I believe. Growing up and attending public school, I believe that each day did in fact begin with the “flag salute”, in which everyone would rise, face the flag, put their hand over their heart, and recite the Pledge of Allegiance aloud, in unison.

When I worked as a substitute teacher in high schools and junior high schools for a few years I did in fact lead the first morning class in the flag salute pretty much every day.

Other occasions when I have participated in flag salutes: before meetings of the Boy Scouts of America (when I was a scout as a kid) and at the beginning of meetings of the local Planning Commission and City Council.

I’ve always thought it was weird, and fairly bogus. But I’ve never made an issue out of it. It is all about compelled conformity.

Anyway: Yes, it actually happens, at least places I’m familiar with.
