Ovenbird in Bryant Park

These guys are unbelievably nonchalant about humans in this park — it is a tiny park full of humans, after all. On the bird walks for weeks we’ve seen them just shuffle around in their chicken-like way around our feet, exhibiting behavior quite unlike the ovenbirds of the woods, where one hardly ever sees them (though you can hear them in the summers).

At first I thought this one was injured or sick, because it just sat there as I approached. Turns out it just wanted a nap. And to “have its toilet,” as David Attenborough puts it. When I got really ominous, towering right above it, it did finally move away. I was relieved that I didn’t have to catch it and take it for rehabilitation.
