rhamphotheca: Yellowstone National Park – WY, USA Yellowstone…

rhamphotheca:

Yellowstone is in bloom and prolific displays of sego lilies, also called mariposa lilies, adorn many of the meadows south and east of Yellowstone Lake.

The plant requires well drained soil and is cold hardy. The roasted or boiled bulbs of the lily were used as a food source by the American Indians who also taught the Mormon pioneers in Utah to eat them when other food was scarce. It is the state flower of Utah. Mariposa Lake on Two Ocean Plateau in southern Yellowstone was named after this lily.
