At work the other day one of the other programmers mentioned an agile-development concept called “firing a tracer”, where you pick a small, self-contained piece of a big, risky change and implement it so you learn things and better assess how to proceed.

I responded that I liked the concept, but didn’t like the martial tone of the metaphor. I proposed that instead we call it “adopting a kitten,” as in the kind of thing you should do before deciding whether to have a child.

Hiiiiiiii! Just wondering: if the Kickstarter raises enough funds to produce season 2, but not season 3, will you guys have another Kickstarter after the second season ends? I’d really like to see more of this show

Wednesday, August 20th, 2014

Obviously, the ideal is we hit the flex goal on the Indiegogo, which would give us the opportunity to produce seasons 2 and 3 AT THE SAME TIME.

However, we do have back-up plans should we not reach the goal.  We are dedicated to telling our entire story and we’ll keep on working around the clock to make that happen!

Holy crap. I can’t believe I forgot to share this gift from our baby shower this weekend. Our insanely talented friend Kim made this Adventure Time mobile for us!

This is the coolest thing I have ever seen.

So at what time do they usually put the new B&H video up? Cause I’m starting to fear the worst (the worst being no new ep tonight).

Here, in Excel format. I’ve charted the information for both this channel and all the other channels and there’s no concrete pattern. All times are in the US Eastern Time Zone from the Twitter verifications to my phone. There is no way of predicting yet whether the videos will go up before or after my favorite bar’s Happy Hour ends.

Okay???? This is not just okay! This is remarkable and wonderful and thanks so much for taking time for doing this!!

Also yeah,  this is completely inconclusive xD

YAAAAAAY!! I love it when people use spreadsheets in fandom!

I can’t believe anyone would do such a thing. That is just so ridiculous.

Thanks so much for doing this! Lost of new music for me to listen! :)

You are super welcome. I wouldn’t necessarily have chosen all of these exact songs, but the albums are all (with the possible exception of the Arcade Fire) ones that have meant a lot to me.

Best I could do. This is the music video, which includes some clips from the movie, along with my beloved spuds.

I just lost it when that song started playing in the theater. I didn’t know what fangirling was; I don’t think the term would be invented for a few decades. But I sure did it.

muchtoofullofsand:

True story:  I completely lost it when this movie opened.  My mom actually saw it before me and said, “Katie, you just have to see this movie.  You will love it.  That’s all I’m going to say.”  AND BOY WAS SHE RIGHT.  You see, Hello Dolly! is one of my all-time favorite musicals, and as many you know, it is kind of a centerpiece in this movie.  Especially with opening shot with the “Out theeeeeeeeeeerre!  There’s a world outside of Yondeeeeers, Barnabeeeeee!”.  That’s when I lost it.  I started cracking up with joy, and all of my friends, (and probably most other theater-goers) were very confused.  It was glorious.

And that’s my Wall-E story.

That’s a great story. I loved Wall-E from the start, too, though I didn’t have the Hello Dolly connection.

That reminds me of another time, though. It was 1983, and on a visit home from college I went to the movies with some buddies. We saw Doctor Detroit, a comedy starring Dan Akroyd that none of us knew much about.

In truth it wasn’t much of a movie. But when the opening sequence started, it showed Dan Ackroyd as a nerdy guy race-walking through the streets of Detroit. Which was kind of funny. But the title track of the movie started playing over it, and it was instantly recognizable to any over-the-top fanboy that it was a hitherto unreleased track from my then-favorite band, Devo.

It was unexpected and oh so awesome. I embarrassed my friends, and towards the end of the song when the band’s name flashed onscreen I embarrassed them some more.

Wait; it must be a YouTube…

Saw my neighbor wearing an “UNFUCK THE WORLD” tee today. Really summed up how I’ve been feeling. (Ban Ki Moon’s warning today that we’re facing the greatest collection of humanitarian crises in UN history is just the cherry on top.) Then I found this Tumblr: utwnow!

cetacean-captivity:

I got mad and made a thing.

Also respect them, keep your distance and don’t be interfering if you do see them in the wild!

There are much worse things than captivity that the anti-caps should be fighting against.

I stopped going to Sea World when I was about 15 because I was disturbed at the thought of orcas being kept in small tanks and forced to perform unnatural behaviors for their owners’ profit. I don’t think I’m against captivity per se, generally speaking, but some cases of captivity bug me, and that’s one of them.

I know you work in a zoo, and probably have a better sense of the impact of captivity on animals in general than I do. I’m curious what you think about the issue of orca captivity as currently practiced, specifically.

There are almost always going to be worse things that can be cited for any injustice people are fighting against; that doesn’t make the lesser evil just. I’d also stipulate that some animal-rights activists, like a lot of activists, are under-informed to the point that they’re fighting against an imaginary construct more than an actual evil that exists in the world.

Anyway, not trying to pick a fight. But I’m curious if you’d be willing to explain your views about this in more detail. Thanks!

A 1966 edition of Birds of North America: A Guide To Field Identification

My grandmother owned this and I remember it being part of her household.  I eventually got the expanded and revised edition with the blue cover, but now it’s out of my possession.

My grandfather also had a clothbound book for tracking animals, but books like that were heirlooms.  I only saw it a few times and have no idea where it would be today, although I still think about it sometimes.

I had this edition, too. For a number of years there it was my go-to guide. It replaced my first, the Peterson Western, hardbound with the green cloth cover, and then was replaced itself by the revised Golden with the blue cover that the OP mentions. I’m pretty sure I used that as my primary field guide until the big Sibley came out in 2000.

These days I use the Sibley app on my phone. It’s not as nice as the book, some ways, but it’s a lot easier to carry so it’s always with me, and it has the audio, too.

I still feel nostalgic about the actual field guides, though.

I have been tagged. First time, I think. At least the first time I complied with the request. Anything for matterofawesome.

Quoting: “You can tell a lot about someone by the type of music they listen to. Hit shuffle on your ipod, phone, itunes, media player etc and write down the first 10 songs. Then pass this on to 10 people. One rule: no skipping.”

  1. Give Me Back My Man – The B-52’s, Wild Planet
  2. In Motion – Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, The Social Network (Soundtrack)
  3. Travels in Nihilon – XTC, Black Sea
  4. Yours Is No Disgrace – Yes, Classic Yes
  5. How Will He Find Me – Deb Talen, Sincerely
  6. Austin Texas Mental Hospital, Pt. 3 – Stars of the Lid, The Tired Sound of Stars of the Lid
  7. Terrible Canyons of Static – Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
  8. Submarine – I Am Jen, Electronic Collection No. 1
  9. Not a Lullaby – The Weepies, Be My Thrill
  10. In the Backseat – The Arcade Fire, Funeral

Since “pass this on to 10 people” wasn’t included in the one rule, I shan’t pass it on. The chain dies with me. Sorry, would-be meme-propagators.
