Woah given that, I’m surprised you follow me at all. It’s actually really interesting to know how people approach tumblr. I personally go through all of my dash, which is possible simply because I’m a college kid.

I appear to have been very wrong about no one finding that post interesting. Live and learn.

Are you surprised I follow you because of my comment about always skipping “self-righteous/angry social justice”? If so, please be assured (and anyone else I follow, be likewise assured): I don’t follow anyone whose SJ-related posts I have a problem with. The emphasis in that line should very much be seen as falling on the “self-righteous/angry” part. And I’m not trying to be the tone police; it’s not my place to instruct someone who’s chosen to do battle online how they should or shouldn’t go about it. It’s just that I’ve decided, for myself, not to consume that content as part of my Tumblr activity.

Maybe you were talking about something completely different, though. Anyway, for what it’s worth, I follow you 50% for your excellent meta, 30% for your general mix of commentary/self-revelation/curation of interesting bits, and 20% for your snazzy icon, which is arguably the prettiest of anyone I currently follow. I haven’t been following you very long, but you’ve definitely made it past the probationary period.

*snorts* snazzy icon  it’s stock footage of neon swirls though

Naw, I’m more surprised because you said you skip both Harry Potter and the social justice, and superhero movies and like, I don’t think you follow Legend of Korra/Avatar the Last Airbender or any anime? and it’s just a big part of my blog too, and I was genuinely shocked to find I was among only 98 people. (I follow 189, though like 10-20% are probably inactive that I hope to come back.)  But like the rest of my blog is just pretty images, reblogged puns, and me whining about my life. (Or at least that’s how I perceive myself? Am I wrong?)

Also I’m always a little surprised that people read anything I write at all, most of the time I feel like I’m just exasperatedly talking to myself – which would sound absolutely bonkers if it was done any place other than the internet. I mean I suppose a journal would work, but that’s not nearly as interesting to me. My brain gets distracted when I have to write by hand – and I can’t read my own handwriting sometimes. Typing is much faster.

I can only speak for myself. But for me, there’s social justice commentary I very much enjoy and appreciate and learn from. And then there’s commentary that maybe doesn’t work as well for me, but makes me think, and I value it for that. And then occasionally there’s commentary that, especially over time, builds up a picture in my head of someone so committed to their cause that following them feels like being a foot soldier on the front lines between opposing armies, and even if I’m generally sympathetic to the cause I end up suffering from battle fatigue and have to rotate to the rear.

So that’s what I was talking about. But like I said, no one I follow these days feels like that to me.

But more importantly, and again speaking just for me, I really enjoy following you and reading your otherwise-bonkers ravings and whining. Also, my kids got me into Avatar and Korra, and both of those are (of course) awesome.

The thing I find compelling about the people I follow isn’t necessarily the shared fandom, though that’s really nice when it’s there. It’s more the chance to get to know, at least in this weird abstract way, another person I wouldn’t otherwise have met, and walk around in a little museum they’ve made from this wacky website.
