so cal vibes

From 5th grade until 12th grade, this was my home town.

Staying there though 12th grade took some work on my part. And with actual work being something I was unfamiliar with going into 12th grade, it feels like a significant accomplishment when I look back on it.

It’s not that managing to stay in my bastion of mostly unrecognized white privilege one more year after my dad moved away was in any sense a noble cause. But it was something — probably the first thing — that I undertook to do as an independent person and actually, albeit imperfectly, pulled off. Despite all the ways I screwed up my senior year (and there were lots of them, including dropping out two weeks before graduation), and despite all the rampant immaturity that I see in almost everything I did back then and for many years to come, I think that was my first real step toward adulthood.

Tags: well, I've been thinking about this a lot lately, because the YA novel I'm working is basically my high school story, though cooler and more dramatic, and it's set right here, in the 1979 version of right here.
