Yellow (Mangrove) Warbler, Setophaga petechia erithachorides (by rolando chdm)

Here is the ever-popular Yellow Warbler wearing a rusty hood while on summer vacation.

[Note: I’d like to point out that I’m a bit inconsistent about whether the Parulidae Junior High students I post are individual birds or representatives of a whole clique of birds of their species. This one is throwing me for a loop because I didn’t know that Yellow Warblers came in different versions, but since this is male summer plumage I’ve decided that the Yellow Warbler is simply wearing a different outfit here than usual.]

Fun fact: I actually assumed this was a different species from the Yellow Warbler I’m familiar with, since this version of it never appears in the North-America-north-of-Mexico field guides I’ve used all my life. But in checking now, I see that you’re absolutely right, and this is simply a subspecies of the one I know, and that there are a number of other subspecies of the Yellow Warbler, varying primarily in terms of the extent of red coloration on the adult male’s head.

Awesome. :-)
