Meet the crabeater seal (Lobodon carcinophaga). It’s a charming specialized predator that lives on the coasts of Antarctica. It feeds almost exclusively on krill (90% of their diet) and sometimes cephalopods and antarctic fish.

Technique: The seal gobbles mouthfuls of krill and water drains through the spaces created by its teeth.

Crabeaters have little food competition, but as pups they are heavily preyed upon by leopard seals.

If you love the crabeater mug go here for a short story told by the person who photographed it.

Please, Please, Please remember citations, even for photos. The first two, (with the labeled specimen) are from The Brain Scoop, specifically this episode

Please, Internet – if you’re posting photos and you obviously did not take them, please take five seconds out of your life to attribute the source material. Google has a great function on their image search which allows you to either upload a photo or put in the URL of the image you’re looking for and it will often times bring up images that look very similar to the one you posted, and will usually link you back to its source (in this case, The Brain Scoop).

As a creator, I’m thrilled when popular websites pick up our material. We put a ton of work into our show and sometimes it’s a little tiring to post weekly videos that are quickly forgotten about – so when they’ve got a chance to become relevant again, it’s dismaying to see our work is not sourced.

And I know I’m preaching to the choir here – you all share in my frustration when you see something we’ve done and there’s no mention of The Brain Scoop, so sincerely thank you for sticking up for me when we can’t be everywhere at once.

tl;dr: Don’t post photos that aren’t yours if you don’t know where they came from because I turn into a giant squid of anger
