Scene 76:

camillavirgil:

Scene 76 is going to be the death of her. Lily knows it. It’s where her character, Olivia, has a Terrible Letdown and a Great Epiphany all at once—being one of those Eternally Fascinating Females that are such a bundle of nerves, tragedy, and emotion that they can only have…

This early experiment with the emerging Impressionist painting style is quite the leap from Pissarro’s painting from only one year before.

Tiina Heiska (b.1959, Finland)

Helsinki-based artist Tiina Heiska’s work revolves around the concept of identity focusing on perception, transformation and desire. She’s dealing with the meaning of identity through questions into the realm of sexuality, age and gender, as well as the process of an origin of a painting. A constant dialogue between photography and painting has always prevailed through Tiina Heiska’s production. As her painting technique she uses oil on canvas. The artist herself feels enthralled by the phenomena of the fast movement caught in the photo changing when rendered through the slow and lasting medium of painting.

In addition to her numerous solo and group exhibitions in Finland, Tiina Heiska has had several solo exhibitions all over Europe. Her work is represented in the public collections of Helsinki City Art Museum, Amos Andersson Art Museum, Finnish State Art Collection and Sara Hildén Art Museum among others. In 2008 she was shortlisted for the prestigious Sovereign Art Prize.

Inspired by  this and this, I decided to do some fan-knitting this weekend for kissing in the rain!!  James is a turtle because he’s awkward like an awkward turtle. And Lily is a bunny because bunnies go with turtles and also because Lily is Lizzie bunnet’s sister in a parallel universe. (Although in my head I called her anna-bunny after mk’s annabel lee) .

Patterns below :)

Bunny, Turtle, Umbrella

You shipsters are too cool for school. This is my favorite awkward turtle since Franklin, his little shell pattern and glasses are ADORABLE. <3 And Anna-bunny is too precious for words.

On the production of Episode 2 of Kissing in the Rain

Anne of Green Gables was one of the very first books/fictional characters I fell in love with – I read it all in a day and then found the Canadian miniseries at my library and fell even more in love with Prince Edward Island and all of Avonlea. It’s one of those books where rereading it feels like catching up with an old friend – it’s been in my life longer than a lot of people-shaped friends.

I had originally written something very different for episode 2, then during our wardrobe fitting Mary Kate mentioned that she had played Anne in a stage musical a few years ago. A couple days later, my tumblr dash was suddenly overflowing with Anne Shirley appreciation (I think projectaogg had just been announced). Since this series is my way of getting to direct scenes from my dream directing projects, I decided to scrap my originally-planned episode (also set in the 1900s) and rewrite it as an Anne of Green Gables-inspired scene. I texted my idea to MK, she loved it as well, and I suddenly had my dreamcast Anne Shirley on board. Writing for Mary Kate as Anne was probably the easiest writing assignment I’ve ever given myself. Meanwhile, Sean had the unenviable task of bringing to life Gilbert Blythe, probably my longest literary crush since ever. Based on YouTube/Tumblr comments, I’d say he more than pulled it off.

Also can I just point out that this episode has Lily and James playing Anne and Gilbert? It’s like a Russian doll of my favorite literary pairings, I was maybe internally freaking out about it the whole time we were shooting.

Sequentially, this was the third episode we shot with Sean and Mary Kate and the first where we had the time/room in the script for some improv. Since there was some interest in the guided improv process I discussed in last week’s commentary post, I can elaborate here. Some of our projects are more improv-based than others (Sean’s scenes A Tell Tale Vlog and all of A Tell Tale Birthdayfor instance), and I pretty much just give the actors a prompt (“it’s like a roommate break up” or “give him a cupcake and then just totally break his heart”) and let them play. After a few takes I give them directions on which parts to focus on, which parts to cut, and we continue. By the last take, we’ve usually figured out the scene beat by beat. I’ve found the vlog-style format lends itself especially well to guided improv, since the jump cuts allow me to pick and choose my favorite sections of each take without too much concern about continuity.

For Kissing in the Rain, we had a more abbreviated version of this guided improv process, since the episodes by necessity are more scripted. I mostly just let the camera roll longer after each scene ended to see where else Sean and Mary Kate would take it. They didn’t disappoint.

Here’s the script post-title smash as I wrote it:

Watch the scene from 1:38 on for script to screen match-up.

I’ve also been getting a lot of questions about the books in this episode – no, they weren’t damaged by the rain. The rain in this episode was more of a faint misting, which I felt was fitting with the magically picturesque Avonlea setting. Anne’s books were actually purchased for our book wall in A Tell Tale Vlog and then I had them in my car to mail to the winners of our original Shipsters FTW contest, and since they were in my car we ended up using them in the scene. (To the two people who are still waiting on these books, I swear I’m going to get to a post office this week and mail them to you!)

That’s it for this week’s directors’ commentary! Let me know if you have any more production questions specific to this episode, my ask box is open and I also answer quick questions on Twitter. As always, thanks for watching and commenting!

Much love,

Yulin

Check out this director’s commentary post on episode 2 of Kissing in the Rain from Shipwreked director, yulinkuang! Stay tuned for a new episode tomorrow at 10am PT!

HAHA! Once again the detail that the fandom caught on to and ran with was improvved. This amuses me greatly. :)

Also: magical Avonlea rain that leaves books (and actors) un-wet was intentional (or at least rationalized as artistic intention after the fact; either way I like it).

Behold, birds who have lost the ability to can!

Just kidding, guys.  These birds are just trolling the hell out of ants.  I really, really wanted to show you this clip of a Galapagos finch or something harassing the shit out of formica ants and then being all “Yes, yes, bathe me in your fury!  Your chemical defenses are now my own!  Mwahahahaha!”, but the closest thing I could find is this video of David Attenborough pissing off some wood ants.  It was basically like that, only instead of an Englishman with a stick, it was a bird stomping around with its wings spread just being an absolute asshole about everything.

This behavior is actually called anting, and there are two types of anting that birds can engage in.  One is just anting, where birds will rub ants all over themselves to get that precious, precious formic acid all up in their feathers.  They’ll also do it with mothballs, cigarette butts, and certain sorts of beetles and millipedes.  The other one is passive anting, where a particularly lazy bird will find an anthill and just flop down on it with all their feathers spread and puffed and annoy the ants until they hop to and try to make them leave, at which point the bird rubs its wings together and goes “Yeeeeeess.”

They do this to get rid of external parasites, because external parasites are annoying.  Ant-eating birds who do this are getting a two-for deal out of it, because they get the ants to empty their acid sacs in a beneficial location (the bird’s feathers) and then get to eat them without having to deal with the acid in their crops, so it’s basically like if your bug-spray or deoderant came in a bacon bottle.

Formica ants get the brunt of this, because they’re super-common and quite frequently spray the acid instead of trying to inject it, so the bird can get itself doused and then preen it into its feathers.  Considering the spraying of acid is like the ant way of saying “Oh my god go away you dickhead I hate you we all hate you why are you still here jesus christ what is wrong with you,” we can be reasonably sure that they’re not super-thrilled by this bird behavior.  Since the birds keep doing it, we can be reasonably sure that they don’t care about the ants’ feelings.

Birds are also known to sunbathe.

Study Finds Up to One Billion Birds Killed in Building Collisions Each Year

In the most comprehensive study of its kind, involving the review and analysis of almost two dozen studies and more than 92,000 records, federal scientists have found that between 365 and 988 million birds are likely killed in the U.S. each year as a result of collisions with buildings.
