More on the DFTBA sex scandals:

What’s really interesting about this article are the comments, especially this one:

he has a duty to be up front and at the start of this video, should have *clearly* stated he & his company are doing this because of one sex abuse scandal after another involving male youtubers sexually abusing young female fans (some of these dudes connected to the vlogbros record label, DFTBA).

wtf is he framing this discussion in such a casual way for? he should name these men who in a couple cases his own company is associated with, and in all cases who he shares the same social circle with – famous male youtubers taking advantage of the power imbalance between them & their fanbase made up of teenage girls. this is irresponsible. don’t make a video like this and *not* mention this sh*t. why no mention of the context here? passing himself off as an educator for the cause?? (also wtf marysue, why no mention of this while you’re praising the guy & promoting him?)

One interesting thing I learned in those comments was that Dr. Lindsay Doe of the Hank-Green-co-created Sexplanations series has recommended (and defended) homeopathic treatment for STDs. That’s a red flag for me. If an expert is willing to promote something I know to be bogus, it calls into question her whole epistemology, and by extension everything else she’s saying. I assume that most of the advice she’s giving is good. But if she’s mixing in bullshit, and sounds just as enthusiastic and sure of herself when doing so, how do I know which parts to trust?

It reminds me of the reaction I’ve had to some SciShow and Crash Course videos, where I’ve felt that a statement was being made too glibly, in a manner that promoted a misleading impression. And for that matter, it reminds me of the approach to writing some of the material that has come out of Pemberley Digital lately. It’s fast-paced and engaging and colorful. But at times it seems intellectually shallow.

Enthusiasm is awesome. So is critical thinking. One without the other can lead to problems.
