Today we welcome Bethany Hagen to the Penguin Teen Author Spotlight, and we couldn’t be more excited! Romance, mystery, and danger are all wrapped up into one adventure in Landry Park, where the elegant world of the gentry and the terrible consequences of nuclear technology collide. Before you dive in (like we know you want to!), stay and get to know Bethany!

Name: Bethany Hagen

Novel: Landry Park

Available: 2.4.2014

Who’s your favorite author, living or dead? Either Charlotte Bronte or J.R.R. Tolkien.  I’ve read both Jane Eyre and Lord of the Rings once a year since junior high—they are the books that remind me of why I started believing in romance and adventure in the first place.

What’s your favorite thing about your book? The blue lanterns.  Or maybe the dresses.  Or maybe the kissing.

If you could spend one year on a deserted island with one character from literature, who would you choose? I feel like Aragorn would probably keep me alive, and would be very stoic and thoughtful while doing it, but Harold from Harold and the Purple Crayon could probably draw us a house with a veranda and a fully-stocked bar.

Where do you write? I currently live in a tiny rectangle built right after World War II, so I usually flee my house to write at the nearest coffee shop.  That way, whenever I’m stressed about a deadline, I can look up at the silently weeping college students and remember that life used to be much worse.

Who is your favorite hero or heroine of history? King Arthur.  He was real.

Do you tweet? What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever tweeted? I do tweet (@Bethany_Hagen.)  I seem to tweet about napping and bad wifi connections a lot.

What is your favorite season? Summer, especially here in the Midwest.  Cicadas, fireflies, barbeques, neighborhood kids giggling in dark backyards.  Tall trees with wide green leaves that rustle in the wind.  Thunderstorms that shake the house, the sound of lawn mowers in the background.  The kind of heat that necessitates water guns and garden hoses.

If you could teleport anywhere in the known universe right now, where would you go? England or Scotland.  My husband and I travelled there a couple years ago and had a magical time and even more magical Indian food.  For a history and literature nerd, there’s really no better place than Britain.

Do you have any writing rituals? Coffee + tumblr + music = mood set.

What is your idea of earthly happiness? Besides coffee and tumblr?  Living in the English countryside in a house full of books and bottles of 14-year-old Scotch, sleeping in late and then writing until the stars start winking outside.

What is the best concert you’ve ever been to? Tool.  They are one of my favorite bands anyway, but the sheer energy and talent that they brought to the stage was magnificent.  It was one of those giant arena venues and when everybody sang along, you could feel their voices vibrating in your own throat and in your fingertips.

What are you currently working on? I’m working on the Landry Park sequel (Landry Park II: The Tulle Returns) and once that’s finished, I have a nice Ozark ghost story percolating in my brain that will probably start leaking out soon.

……………

Thanks, Bethany! We can’t wait to read the sequel to Landry Park!
