This photo is in honour of my friend and co-worker who has to have her dog put down today. She loved him tenderly for eleven years and did what she could to prologue his life. I understand many consider pets to be frivolous extensions of our egos and can’t understand how we care so much for them when there are people who are starving and oppressed throughout the world, who could only dream of the life we provide for our animals. That said, many people choose to become parents and partners after first learning how to love a pet. They make us more compassionate as people, and maybe, just maybe, our special bond with them allows us to understand the plight of our own species. RIP Enzo.
