This is a very understated and beautiful adaptation, and I like it much more than the miniseries. It also has a beautiful soundtrack.

Sally, which adaptation is this?

I’ll admit I haven’t seen any of them but this looks gorgeous. Recommend?

Yes, I love this one, though YMMV. This is the recent Jane Eyre film (2011, with Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender), and since it is a movie rather than a miniseries, a lot is left out or abbreviated. I didn’t agree with all those choices, but overall I thought that it was well done and suggestive of the stuff that was left out. I saw it with a friend who had not read the book and had no idea what would happen, and she loved it.

They wanted to play up the gothic aspect, but a lot of the more scary things got edited out (good for me, since I’m easily disturbed by scary movies). It is much more faithful to the book than the miniseries is (2006, with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens), but some people prefer the miniseries.

If you watch it, listen for Rochester’s voice on the wind.

The scene where Jane tells off Rochester gets me every time. Mia Wasikowska was so good in that.
