A rare sighting… a mother Common Pauraque (Nyctidromus albicollis), a kind of cryptically colored nightjar, with her chick, in the garden at the North American Butterfly Association’s center in Mission, TX.

Goatsuckers don’t mess around when it comes to camouflage. In a life spent birdwatching, I’ve seen a non-flying goatsucker exactly twice, each time completely by accident, after placing my face unknowingly within a foot or so of the bird on an eye-level branch.
Oh, hello there. You’re a bird, aren’t you? Wow.
