While watching the scene in the top gif, my wife was bothered by the CGI ships, so we paused and analyzed. I ended up taking the position that yes, she was right that based on their sails, the wind was coming from different directions for different ships. But for the most part I thought that made sense, since it is not uncommon for the breeze near shore to be affected by the land, such that it is blowing from a completely different direction than the “real” breeze farther out to sea.

But that ship on the far right, both in this shot and later on in the scene when only three ships are visible, really confused me. I have no idea what’s going on with that ship. I’m suspicious that the animators who created it may not have had any idea either.
