Do you find it amusing that while all the young people are dying, your character is still alive?

I’m trying to think what age I am now—I must be in my hundreds. I’m not sure, but I don’t know, if I got another job, do you think I would leave? I don’t think so. I’m not going to quit. So I’ll wait and see. I’ll have to see what Julian has in store for me.

So if the Dowager Countess dies it will be from his pen, not your agent.

Oh, it will be from his pen, or just natural causes.

I hope not.

I hope not, too.

Do you expect him to kill your character?

Honestly, I have no idea. We don’t really know what’s happening until we get the script. As far as I know, and I’ve gotten up to about episode seven, I’m still alive and kicking.

Dame Maggie Smith, ladies & gents.

“Now that my career is starting, it’s rather difficult to keep up with it.”
