Dunham’s Obama Ad

Reminding me why I’m really looking forward to season 2 of Girls, Lena Dunham made this ad for Barack Obama:

Also, Mary Elizabeth Williams has fun commentary on conservatives’ response: Conservatives flip out over Lena Dunham Obama ad.

Heard about it before I saw the ad. Cute.

I’m more in line with Sarah Silverman ;)

the Dunham ad is cute, not so much the Silverman.

  3. shcb Says:

As far as the Silverman ad goes, I’m not so sure I would be so proud of my party boasting so many million illegal voters

Wait, wait. I want to try to understand the point you’re making, shcb. In order to maximize the chances you will actually explain it in more detail, I am willing to promise not to say, after I’ve fully understood what you mean, that I consider it to be horribly wrong (should that happen to be the case).

I just watched the Silverman ad. I thought it was reasonably funny, but that’s not really the issue. I thought the underlying phenomenon she was talking about, voter ID laws, was a valid issue to raise, because I do, in fact, think the voter ID laws that Republican governors and legislatures have instituted in those states are bogus, for precisely the reasons she alludes to (in between the jokes): That there is, in fact, no existing problem of election results being at risk of being changed by people voting in-person as someone other than who they actually are. But the laws create a very real risk of election results being changed because millions of people who are constitutionally entitled to vote are denied the vote because of the onerous conditions that the laws create, conditions that are transparently an attempt to selectively disenfranchise groups of voters that tend to vote Democratic.

So, when you said “I’m not so sure I would be so proud of my party boasting so many million illegal voters”, were you talking about the voter ID laws? If so, would you be willing to say in what way your comment relates to them (given, again, my promise not to say I think you’re horribly wrong, should it turn out that that’s what I think)? Or were you talking about something completely different, and if so, what? What is this boast to which you refer? Who are these millions of illegal voters?

    Thanks.

I know it is poor form to answer a question with a question but what is so onerous in asking someone to show a photo id? Photo id, notice how she says 21 million don’t have driver’s licence but they can all get an alternate id from their state, blind people for instance can’t drive but can easily get a state issued photo id. There is a problem with voter fraud, but if there is no problem then what is so wrong with asking people to show an id with your picture on it?

Now to the ad, the old man asks why he can’t use his SS card, and the vet why not his military card, quite sadly showing is lost leg, tears at the heart strings. But both men probably have at some time bought liquor, they need that same id for that, they drove to the photo op in a car they needed an id to purchase, drive, get insurance on the car, used it for the check to pay for the license plate, they then went home, the mortgage on the house needed that same id, when they went to a new dentist or doctor they needed that same id. Bottom line… they have the id, the only conceivable reason those 21 million people (wink wink, we covered that distortion above) don’t have an id is they are voting illegally. And by the way, if you don’t have an id but are legal you get a provisional ballot and have a few days to prove your eligibility, no one is stopping anyone from voting, well legal voting anyway.

After the 2010 mid terms there were investigations in Houston into voter fraud. One of the groups that was investigated was known as Houston Votes, Leo Vasquez, the Harris County Tax Assessor called them the area’s “new ACORN organization”. One thing they found was “1,133 of the applicants claimed, under penalty of perjury, to have no photo ID, yet the Harris County investigation revealed that the vast majority of them did in fact have a driver’s license.” because they needed them for all the above, but for some reason they didn’t want to use them for voting. I wonder why?

  7. jbc Says:

Okay, thanks for clearing that up. Please resume your regularly scheduled whatever it is you would normally be doing if I weren’t pestering you with questions.

  9. shcb Says:

When you get the chance look at the first of that Silverman ad and count the number of times she race baits.

  10. knarlyknight Says:

yea, I think that was part of the joke shcb.

    I like this Romney ad – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TiXUF9xbTo&feature=share

  11. shcb Says:

Now that is funny in it’s absurdity, that’s a good ad, he didn’t have to say Romney is going to fuck you in the ass for the sake of being able to use the words fuck in the ass about a Republican. You can make a point, without saying the words fuck in the ass, even if your message is as distorted (well, not quite as distorted) as the ad that used the words fuck in the ass by a cute little bitch.

For the record, Republicans have overreacted to the virgin ad, it was cute and not over the top in the least.

  12. enkidu Says:

Sounds like you wanted to say an anti-semitic word or two there wwnj. And lawmakers who are trying to keep people from voting are indeed screwing over one of our citizens’ most basic rights: voting.

Oh wait, 21 million illegal votes? Gosh that sure sounds like a lot of ass-fucking. I’m sure lefty is excited about the prospect. Anyhoo, I’m off to buy futures in KY jelly and vaseline.

  13. shcb Says:

Explain to me the mechanism anyone is being denied the vote, especially how any single group is being denied?

  14. shcb Says:

Why would I want to say an anti Semitic word? But I guess you did notice Silverman’s race baiting.
