Free at Last! (Except You Homos.)

Sigh.

Thank you, Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. Thank you, God-fearing, gay-shunning Afro-Californians. You helped ensure that any joy I felt at participating in Obama’s history-making election was instantly tempered by the knowledge that bigotry shall not perish from the earth. By passing Proposition 8 you made sure that California’s schoolchildren would not be taught that it’s okay to be gay; instead, they’re being taught that it’s okay to discriminate based on sexual orientation.

It was a great victory, and I’m glad I got to see it. But it came with a slave whispering in my ear:

For over a thousand years, Roman conquerors returning from the wars enjoyed the honor of a triumph – a tumultuous parade. In the procession came trumpeters and musicians and strange animals from the conquered territories, together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments. The conqueror rode in a triumphal chariot, the dazed prisoners walking in chains before him. Sometimes his children, robed in white, stood with him in the chariot, or rode the trace horses. A slave stood behind the conqueror, holding a golden crown, and whispering in his ear a warning: that all glory is fleeting.

I find it sadly ironic. If you really believe in the Bible, the justification for slavery is really good as well.

This is the problem with a democracy, there is no protection of the minority from the majority. This is why the founders were so careful to form a representative republic and so careful to not form a democracy. California and Colorado have the most vibrant initiative processes in the country and I absolutely hate it, even though I am sympathetic to some of the things that get passed and probably wouldn’t get passed without this system I still hate it in principal.

This too shall pass. I’m just glad we have the internet, so all this anti-gay crap can be thrown back in people’s faces in 20 years, when it’s just as socially unacceptable to be anti-gay as it is to be anti-black today.

Yeah, I kept reading that the founding fathers wanted to protect us from the tyranny of democracy, oh well.

Here is one person’s answer to the poor support by Blacks in California.

I blame the Mormons for prop 8. They’re the ones who spent millions of dollars, from out of state. They use their own children to stand on street corners holding “Yes on 8” signs. At the same time, they put forth deceptive ads claiming gay marriage will be taught to children in schools. My wife being a teacher, she has only now had the subject of gay marriage brought up in class: by her students, because of prop 8. Hypocrites.
