Schools Sell Curriculum to MPAA

Courtesy of Bravo – this yahoo story seems to me a convergence of several kinds of stupidity into one big scary story. Underfunded schools are apparently accepting “sponsorships” from the MPAA to allow them to stick guys in suits in classrooms to lie to kids about the evils of filesharing. Even aside from the one-sided indoctrination that the EFF is complaining about, when the hell did we decide it was a good idea to let corporations inject their messages into lesson plans? Today’s nutrition lesson is brought to you by McDonalds!

It all comes down to money — the government won’t pay for school stuff any more (having a missile shield is more important! :p ) so the schools look where they can to get money.

    …and the corporations slip in.

Michael Moore brought it up in “Stupid White Men” — Nike puts up money to boast their brand name to schools or get naming rights for stadiums, other companies distribute school supplies… other companies buy the right to force their products on the kids during a school day (Coke or pepsi buy rights to have their drinks sold in schools, McDonalds opens stores in schools, etc)…

It’s just a big corporate mess and of course – no one can stop it until money gets funneled where it’s needed and coporate money isn’t needed to survive.

As a teacher, I am outraged at the idea that “guest teachers” would be allowed to come into my classroom and teach a curriculum not aligned with the state standards imposed upon us by the State Board of Education. Our school year is already interrupted by fire drills, distaster drills, safety lock down drills, assemblies for fund raising, assemblies to fight against drugs, gangs, sex – you name it, the schools are doing it. And yet, teachers are still responsible for implementing the curriculum in order to raise scores on standardized tests. I’m sure that there won’t be any questions on copyright laws on those exams.

    “…

Indeed, Jack Valenti, president of the MPAA, told Penn State University faculty and students this week that his industry is in “a state of crisis” over digital theft.

    …”

Yeah, sure state of crisis! How about the MPAA spending money to clean up their own movies of sex, drugs and violence before pointing their finger at anyone else.

And what about the MPAA giving an academy award to Roman Polanski the fugitive child molester?

As an educator I say that all of this is pointless and by that I mean the bitching and moaning about this and that with education. If we realy want results we need to get our slut union out of the political back pockets and demand change in public education financing. STRIKE in the name of education reform hmmmm now there is a novel idea, bt wait what about the “The only people to lose out in the strike are the kids” comments. I reply the only ones to lose out now with the way things are happen to be the students.

Stumbled on this, and had to correct a piece of false information. The MPAA did not give an Oscar to Polanski or anyone else. The Oscars come from AMPAS, a different group.
