Ebert on Private vs. Public Prayer

Roger Ebert has written a great piece on the scary theocratic elements of the Bush/Aschroft “faith-based” approach to government: Public prayer fanatics borrow page from enemy’s script. Please, God, help us to elect leaders who understand what he’s talking about. Amen.

That article brings up many good points, again, most of which I’ve heard elsewhere or made myself.

It’s interesting to note that one of the most effective warfare tactics is getting your opponent to ignore its own fundamentals and doctrines. This causes a rift in the society, forcing the opponent to waste resourses quelling infighting.

Of course, in a country such as ours where there is an exception to every rule and not really a single entity which can say “Fuck you, it’s getting done like this” it’ll happen on its own quite frequently.

Silly Sun-Times web site; they took the story down. But it’s archived on the Interesting-People mailing list.
