Klein High School’s Anti-Gay Crusade

Nice article at the Houston Press (pointed out to me by Hiro), about a lawsuit brought against Klein High School and the Klein Independent School District in Harris County, Texas, to get the school to allow formation of a club for gay and straight students to talk about discrimination.     I am a graduate from Klein High school, i am shocked and appauled at what is happening to my beloved High School, in this high school the is zero tolerance for PDA, but now we are allowing for students to go to school and discuss sexual orientation.

    I am still going to the school and I was disgusted by the attempt to get the club formed. Now that it has the group members are being discrimnated against and they wonder why. When you go public with being gay and your not on tv your bound to have a few kids get pissed and beat you after school. But what really pissed me off about this was that if the board didnt approve the club the would ban all other clubs at the school. And me being in the Card Game Club i was outraged.

    I am a graduate from Klein High School, and I wish that this club had been created when I was still a student there. If there had been supportive people around when I was having problems with my sexuality, than I would have been spared a lot of pain during high school.

    Now , because of a great GSA at the university I attended, I have no problem with my being gay, but I still hold the scars from multiple suicide attempts that could have been prevented in high school.

    I hope that this club helps people like me to sort out their feelings and feel better about themselves.

    I am a former student of Klein High School and have no problems with the formation of a club focusing on sexual orientation. However, I feel that if the students truly wanted to start such a club they could of easily done so without resorting to a lawsuit. A group of students could have simply started holding meetings outside of school property without any difficulty and without wasting tax payer money in the court system.

    i attend a school in the same district as klein, the school every one refures to as ” the new one “. there is a large group of homosexuals at my school. this lawsuit has allowed there the posibility of a gay straight alliance and it means alot to some of those students. as a school now just three years old we all have a large part in the founding of our school clubs and organizations. if we start out right maybe we can continue to do so

    As a former teacher in the district. I am pleased that so many of the comments found here are from people who are intelligent enough to know that homosexuality isn’t catching. The only way a society can survive is to promote understanding between all groups of people. It is too bad so many individuals feel threatened by what they don’t understand.

    To the child with the school board comment; Your fear,ignorance, prejudice and lack of education are showing. You might have to look some of those words up. Oh and NO, you “aint” right. I believe the school board members are straight enlightened individuals. You could always go to a school board meeting and ask them.

    I think you need to pay a little more attention in school and at least learn to spell. The only two intellegent responses I see above are from Lori and Kay. I too am a former student and wish that there were such a group when I attended. I just went to my 25 year reunion. I’ve been out of state for almost 20 years – and what a culture shock to come back. I’m proud to be a native Texan, but it sure is scary to realize that there are so many people that still have such “unenlightened” attitudes. I have several friends who attended school at the same time as I who accept me for who I am. I am quite blessed by that. Go GSA!!

    I didn’t realize people were still talking about it, lol. I attend a high school in neighboring Cy-Fair district, and I was in the process of forming my own club when the whole Klein controversy happened. Mine was a very broad “Students Against Intolerance” though, and I happened to mention defense of gays in the proposal. Thus, it has taken me a year to actually get the thing started, and I have been told I’m not allowed to mention that subject at the meetings (not that I’ll really follow orders…;)), but we can’t really even say that it’s bad to call someone a fag. It’s just a shame that the area we’re in is like this, but hopefully these organizations and viewpoints will change all this. And good for the people that started the club at Klein! I’m mildly jealous, lol. That was all irrelevant, but whatever.

    Wowie! I graduated from Klein in ’74 and, having read some of the posts above must wonder, has the English language died? When i was at Klein, unless you were a cowboy or in the FFA, it was a touch repressive (all in my humble opinion you must realize), it’s reassuring to know that it’s loosened up a lot in the last 29 years :) As far as the club, I’ve yet to see one good reason why not to have it, and numerous good reasons why to. Oh, and by the way, i’m as straight as it gets:) Go GSA! they needed enlightenment way back in the day and it appears they still do. :)

    This club has no business being part of the school. Even if claims are made that it revolves around acceptance, sexuality plays a big role in the club. What’s next, a pornography club?     I just graduated from Klein in may. in my opinion the club not only divided the school but also allowed the rules to be bent in their favor. if a guy and his girlfriend were seen making out they were immediately stopped but with the law suit teachers were afraid of breaking up two girls who made out in the hall. the founders of the club act like they deserve to be able to break the rules and those who are straight are forced to follow them. it seems to me that this club was formed for one purpose and that was to get the attention they felt they were entitled to

    I am personally against the idea of a Gay Club at any high school. While the idea behind the club is sound (wanting to give support to other students who are gay), can this support be given without the benefit of a Club?

    As a parent, I wonder who will be allowed to join this club. Will gifted 12 year olds be allowed to join? Do we want our sons and daughters to attend clubs where “sexual preference and orientation” is discussed? Do I want my child to attend meetings about why Bob likes Brian and Sally likes Suzie and hey this is all okay and you won’t catch it? Excuse me for saying so, but high school isn’t there to learn about these things.

    Lastly, let’s take this club to the extremes. Will the high school, by allowing this club to form, exist and meet on their property, be forced to allow other clubs of sexual preferences to form and exist? Will we then see a club called “Black Straight Men preferring White Bisexual Women” club? Yes, it is ludicrous, I know. But … allowing one such club means you HAVE to allow other similarly natured clubs.

    Personally, I neither like nor dislike gay people. What they do with their personal lives is just that, personal. I prefer that they keep their personal lives just that, personal. I do not go out of my way to discuss my sexual orientation, I do not expect others to, and I do not expect high schools to be a place to discuss what for most part should be an extremely private aspect of a persons life.

    I’m currently a student enrolled at Klein, and I stumbled across this. Thank you to anyone who posted positive comments. I was in the GSA when it was finally allowed, and it was wonderful to see everyone supporting each other. People tend to look at the club as something totally different then what it is. I wish they’d take the time to realize that it’s Gay -Straight- Alliance, not a ‘Gay Club’ like everyone keeps calling it.

    If religious groups are allowed to have clubs, if clubs based on nationality are created, a club that brings up the topic of sexuality should be allowed as well, especially since it’s for support, and to help other students understand that homosexuality is not a bad thing in the least bit.

    I am an alumni of Klein High School. And I was there when all this stuff going on. Now, GSA wouldn’t be a bad thing at any other high school. But you have to remember that this is Klein. It is the Gay-Straight Alliance. Would any straight person at Klein join this club? Hell No. It would ruin their reputation. This club is basically made up of just gay or bisexual people. There wasn’t that much open “gay-bashing” at Klein until this whole this got started. I still have many contacts back at Klein, and many people bash the crap out of the GSA members. Most of ya’ll probably thought that Klein came out and said “You cannot have this club.” They never said that. Klein had EVERY club fill out new papers during that year. The GSA did not fill out the papers, so Klein didn’t accept it. Plus they didn’t have a teacher to back this club up at the time when all the papers had to be filled out. Klein rejected them on the basis of that. So they decided to sue Klein on the basis of discrimination. Klein caved in because they did not want their “Good” reputation battered (which it still did). The GSA fought dirty. If they would have filled out the papers with all the right information, they whole lawsuit thing and huge media topic would have never happened. It was all their fault. I am not saying that I do not like the club, but I am saying that it’s not the greatest idea to have it at Klein.

    Someone posted this earlier, they were saying how the school is being divided in two and it is true. If you have ever gone to KHS, you will remember the road in front of the T-buildings.     Last year, when all the talk about the GSA was in the Houston Chronicle, i wrote in a response, and much to my surprise it was published in the paper. At the time, i understood the students want/need for the club, but i did not think it was appropriate for highschool. Of course, the liberal media butchered what i said and made me sound discriminatory towards gays and lesbians, but that is besides the point. I now wish i could take back any negative setiment expressed towards the club because it really has been a positive thing in Klein. No matter what anyone says, while the the student body may not be more comfortable with the GSA, it is definately more tolerant and respectful (as a whole, of course there are jerks that are exceptions). What the GSA has done is not promote homo/bi/transgeder sexuality, but it has promoted civil rights for all students in the school. Their efforts are positive and the club only works to further understanding and equality in a school very conservative towards new ideas and differing lifestyles. I appreciate the members of the GSA because they do not promote themselves, they promote humanity.

    Many of the compaints about the formation of this club do not address the fact that elementary through high school is the one of the most predominant teachers of social behavior, meaning that interactions between peers, not the 35-60 year old at the head of the class, will socialize kids. To say that high school isn’t there to learn about sexuality is overlooking the fact that we as humans have sex drives, and yes, most definately between the ages of 15 and 18. Our culture, although improving, is repressive of gay couples hence they and their interactions are hidden. Teens, and anyone for that matter, who think they have a different sexual orientation (wake up all of you out there—gay people exist, their desires are very real, and they aren’t going away) than the commonly viewed couples have no models to go off of and don’t know if it is okay (although found in 10% of humans and harms no one). If you do some research, you’ll find that many of teen suicides and attempts occur because of persecution due to homosexuality.

    Ever heard of the fallocy called slippery slope? A fallocy is a very bad argument therefor bearing little to no weight. The slippery slope fallocy describes an argument that one action will inevitably lead to another (usually preposterous and assumed to be a universally detestable) action. Usually the assumption that one action will lead to this other action is false and preposterous itself, however if a decision making group was fearful that the undesired action would happen, precautions can be taken. General, agreeable, nondescriminatory rules can be written in to the decision making body’s set of rules.

    I graduated from Klein High School 2 years ago and I am glad now that there are finally people there that will stand up against the school’s intolerance. The GSA is not there to promote a “gay crusade”, just to try to prevent intolerance. I now go to Hendrix College, which is known for its liberal ideals and everyone here on the whole is more accepted. Yes there are people out there who are intolerant of conservative thought; they are just as bad as the radical conservatives who are intolerant of the liberals. But that does not mean that a tolerance promoting organization should be put down. UNITY (our GSA) actually has more straight members than gay because they promote TOLERANCE, not “gay orgies” or whatever you may think. We do not sleep with each other or convince others that gay is the way to be. All we do is try to have people understand who we are and not hate us just because we fall in love with someone they think we shouldn’t.

    This is for Jim of Nov. 9th: You don’t know what you’re talking about. And it wasn’t the GSA that took Klein to court, it was, thankfully, the ACLU. The GSA submitted every paper asked for…and then some. They dotted every “i” and crossed every “t”. Get your facts straight.     i graduated from klein oak high school in the same district about four years ago, and lived 5 minutes from klein high school. i wish that there would have been a GSA at my high school back in the day, or even any of the other high schools in our district. after graduating from high school i learned that about 7 others who were in my graduating class at my high school also were gay and lesbian, and wished that there would have been resources and even a club available to us while we were in high school. it would have made harassment and bullying easier to deal with and maybe even prevented. including myself, 4 out of the 7 others that i had mentioned were athletes in high school and now in college, and are thrilled that the start of a GSA at klein high school will finally help those that have been closeted cope with feelings and thoughts about being gay in high school and being gay and an athlete. being an athlete in high school and being gay is like being black and being part of the kkk. you are taught and bred to hate those who are gay/effiminate/pansies and essentially weak, and athletes arent weak. so being an athlete we were taught to essentially hate ourselves. this caused much emotional turmoil after high school. a GSA would have helped in allowing talking about issues and feelings.

    one debate that has been brought up with my group of friends is that having a “gay” club is simply allowing gay teenagers to meet and find partners, or simply recruiting others to be gay. look at having a FCA in high school. isnt that the same thing. allowing christians to meet and find other christians to become “partners” for marriage.

    it all just doesnt make sense to me. i think that those who are afraid of gay people and simply afraid of themselves.

Although, some of the current students’ misspelled comments were so enthralling and convincing that I’m really starting to change my mind. Not really. When they reach college, they will discover that one of their best friends or acquaintances, or perhaps even themselves, are indeed gay.     So, I was just searching the web when I found this site. I’m a student at Klein Collins and I think it’s awesome that Klein started the GSA. I think Collins should follow suite and start a similar club, but maybe a broader one promoting tolerance in general. I should add that I am straight (as far as I know), and I’m totally against all gay schools. In no way would that be helpful. Hate to be harsh, but everyone gets made fun of at some point. If we’re starting all gay schools, maybe we should have all black schools too. Oh wait, isn’t that illegal? We should be more concerned about promoting tolerance than just shutting people out. By sending someone to an all gay school we’re just babying them. Chances are, at school they’ll get made fun of for something else. Problems won’t just disappear. If anyone else from Collins, or any other school for that matter, wants to help feel free to e-mail me. GSA rules!

    I found this site through a random Google search. I, too, go to the “new school”. Kailey, you know me and know that I would support a club promoting tolerance. That’s what this issue is about, Tolerance.

    One of the things I noticed right off the bat is that KC was still young and open. This year dispelled that for me, what with the four-fight day and snide comments made yearlong during announcements about the HP club (which I admit I have never really supported), compounded with the results found by a year-long survey of a senior (now graduated) friend of mine in psychology. We noticed a definate trend in that those who were blatantly opposed to homosexuality thought that you could contract HIV simply through contact with a carrier.

    The biggest problem faced by our rather sedate, no, stagnant school district is that people are complete ignoramuses. They make snap decisions about people and if you do not conform to their views, they pick up rocks and jump you by the T buildings. This has to be stopped. No, I am not homosexual or even bisexual, but I support you or anyone else’s choice to be so.

I know the “founder” of it she was one of my sisters friends. On the tv apperances she made she said that people called her names and shoved her into lockers… ya right no one at klein would even care enough to think about doing that. Klein have 4,000 kids in it. Do you honestly think that before she made the big deal that she did even half of them knew her name much less that she was gay. NO! Everyone would have left her alone if she just let it go. I really dont’ care wether or not she is gay or strait it doesn’t affect me and her sexual preference is none of my business. By having this club they call all the attention to themselves which then creates these problems of “intolerance”. People also call it the gay club. not the gay strait alliance as it was properly named. they preach tolerance yet they don’t tolerate anyone elses opinion. Shouldn’t they be setting the example?

    I used to go to Klein Oak and was just doing a random search to see what was going on with the school. When I went to highschool, I was a very sexual person and did have bisexual experiences. I now realize how wrong that was and that homosexuality should not be advertised like it is. Kids need to understand that, yes, it is 2004, and gays do exsist. But that doesn’t mean that it is okay. Nor should it be promoted. The things I did with girls was for attention. I loved the reaction it caused. I thought for a long time that I was a bi. But it is wrong. And it always will be wrong. And it is wrong for people to try and make that kind of a lifestyle acceptable. Putting a club like that in a highschool is practically saying that people have to accept that.
    I don’t believe in gay bashing or any of that. You should love everyone as you love yourself, I know. But loving someone means helping them, and gays should be helped. Everybody has temptations, and they should be taught to fight them, not give in. If people make these sort of temptations okay, then soon all temptations will be accepted. Like infedelity and junkies. If our society is really going to be okay with these things… well then it is kind of obvious what is going on. I will be praying for highschools nationwide to not accept this kind of club, and for these kids to be getting help from their counselors.

    Hi, first off, let me start by saying that I dont live in america, in fact, im way off in little old New Zealand, yet i still heard about this whole gay/straight club fiasco when it first began, in my high school, being discussed in the hallways on the way to class. When i first heard about it, i thought the hype would die alot sooner than it did, and i think i know why it didn’t. The entire situation changed from just being about this club, into being about the introduction of gay culture and open expression of this into society. It became a fight between gay’s and gay supporters against other straight people to see who could come out ontop of the situation. It is this thought that makes me sad. Reading some of the comments here, actually, a fair majority of them, makes me realise that this whole thing is just a verbalised war. no one has really just taken a step back and said, lets look at the bigger picture, will we still be worrying about how ourselves or our children reacted to some club formed way back in high school in ten years? no, unless someone is seriously obsessed, they won’t be. And this leads me to my point. The idea that someone should have to form a club to discuss such things sickens me. Should people not just accept others, discounting opinions, race, religions, etc. What right do we have to say that we are better than anyone else? what factor makes us so all mighty and powerful enough to pass judgement on our own kind? the answer is simple, there is no right, and there are no factors. The basic idea is that all this bickering, saying that god will pass judgement, and that there is such a thing as anti gay groups, and that there are such things as anti straight groups it appaling, and we should be shocked at ourselves for even thinking such things.
    As much as it sounds like i am trying to describe a perfect world, I assure you, i am not. What I am saying, however, is that humans are dumb. We hate ourselves, our brothers, our own race.     I am not from around there I am actually from Oregon. In every high school I have attended there has been some kind of “gay club”. Never have I seen such a huge and insensible argument over it. The issue breaks down two a few very obvious points.
    People don’t like it, they don’t approve because it’s “Disgusting.” or because “God doesn’t agree.” Well here you go, sense when is it okay to shove your religion or opinion down someone else’s throat? This country was based on freedoms.

    I have read most of the comments, and was appalled. I thought the Klein School District turned out smarter and more polished people than this. What happened? I grieve for our future. To those who have bashed, where are your morals? What are you so scared of? Believe me……..we don’t want to redecorate your house.

    I went to KHS, and felt completely alone and isolated. This group would be wonderfull to those who have nobody to talk with. I was on the football team and played soccer. I felt so lost and didn’t go to the parties. I didn’t hang with the other teammates in fear of them finding out, I was gay. It was hell. The lockerroom was a fear filled place for me. Not because I looked or lusted after anyone, but because I was scared all the time. Funny, that as a Freshman I worked out with the Seniors. Not to mention, I held many of the work-out lifting records. No one would dare mess with me, but that didn’t stop the feeling that I was alone and scared of what could happen. Only to find out, one of my team members was gay. We went out and dated for a while. Neither of us hit on each other, we just knew the other was gay. That was the only thing that saved me during that time. To have found someone going through, what I was.

    So I say, damn right, it’s about time. Plus those of you that are against it. No one wants into your pants. Most gay people are very picky, and believe me……..no one wants your straight ass. We have morals, no one is going to hit on a straight person. That is ridiculous.

I think the whole girl/girl thing just to get attention is sickening. The girls who claim to be bisexual just so that they can impress guys they like.
