Scheer on Dubya’s Failure to Make the Case for War

Once more I link unto the lameosity that is the L.A. Times web site, again for a Robert Scheer column. This one is titled House of Cards, on how dubya’s ongoing attempts to justify war with Iraq have turned into a joke. My favorite quote is at the end: Depressing as it is to acknowledge, it now seems clear we are witnessing the tantrum of a woefully untutored and inexperienced president whose willfulness rises in direct proportion to his inability to comprehend a world too complex for his grasp. Ouch.

Robert Scheer’s most recent column appears to be available at the arcane url “http://www.robertscheer.com/“, without all the ridiculous registration nonsense.

I am getting really sick of all the president bashing going on. We need to stand up behind our leader when we have no other choice. Do you think that we are NOT going to war? Wake up. We are. And there in nothing that any of us can do about it. The sad part is going to be when Al Queda attacks us again (it will happen again) if it is with weapons furnished either by Saddam or weapons purchased with money from Saddam, all the liberal, anti-war, heads-in-the-sand, utopianist, communist freaks will point their fingers (if they are alive to do so) at Bush and ask, “Why didn’t you get rid of him BEFORE he made this possible.”

Wake up. There is much more going on around us than “Save the Planet” protest, SUV-slamming, and lunch at McDonalds.

This from a former military member who has some knowledge of what could have happened if we had not stopped it. Be glad you live in America.

I also like the quote: Unfortunately, unlike Scotch, intelligence does not age well.

Thanks, Colin, for proving that my frustration with the rather low average intelligence level of the U.S. Armed Forces isn’t unjustified. My hat goes off to those who defend our country and can read books without pictures (as few and far between as they may be)

I was going to do some quote analysis but I can imagine that anyone here who has read what you have to say is equally unimpressed (place period here as my keyboard is all jacked up since the last paragraph)

In closing I would just like to say that I WAS glad to live in America until macho loudmouth cowboys took over and flew the “be like us or get the hell out” flag (place another period)

If Americans rallied behind their leader just because he’s there and he’ll do what he pleases, we’d all still be British.

  8. Jeremy Says:

a joke…hmm…i guess that 65% of americans who favor his policy toward iraq must have missed your “joke” memo…..

  9. a_stupid_box Says:

65% — Sounds like about the same percent of Americans whom watch MTV, adults that can’t read above a third-grade level, or internet users connected through AOL. Irony?

To quote Lester Pearson, “The grim fact is that we prepare for war like precocious giants and for peace like retarded pygmies.”

Amazing how many pygmies and giants are to be found in the U.S. these days.

  10. The real Jeremy Says:

65%? What are you talking about? Haven’t you heard the latest bulletin?

“Popular support for Oceania’s war against Iraq is at 99%! Chocolate production is up 300%!”

    Colin,

If, as you say, war with Iraq is so inevitable, why should it matter whether we rally round our fearless leader or not? If dissent makes no difference, why not let us have our fun?

Iraq: has threatened or attacked the US exactly never; holds public (and mutual) loathing for al Qaeda; is al Qaeda’s ideological antithesis in all matters political and religious; according to all available data, has nothing near weapons of mass destruction; and, thanks to a decade of bombings and sanctions, has fairly limited financial resources. Iraq is approximately as likely to facilitate an al Qaeda attack as Iceland. If they somehow overcome all these facts and do so, I promise you a personal apology.

I realize this is a really late reply, but now that all has taken place and there is nothing really to argue about unless you like to focus on the past, keep in mind some of the evidence. And know this as well: The world is run by the almighty dollar and Saddam had a lot of it. He could facilitate an attack with his money from half way across the world without even personally setting it up (the attempted assassination of Bush Sr.) There is much more to this quandary than that meets the eye. One day perhaps we will have all the answers. Just know that there is much more going on in this world than any of us sheltered sheep of the US could ever imagine.

low intelligence in the military? My tested IQ is probably 300% higher than any of the commie liberals hacks on this website…but if the intelligence levels are that low in the military, you would feel right at home as a ‘grunt’
