The Cerulean Warbler Conservation Corridor

The Cerulean Warbler is among the most threatened neotropical migrant land birds in South America. Cerulean Warblers (who nest in North America) spend their winters in tropical mountain forests in Colombia that also harbor rare, endemic birds. These areas have been severely altered by agricultural activities, and over 90 percent of the Cerulean Warbler’s preferred wintering habitat has been lost…

because…birds!

As a young child growing up in Southern California, looking at the pictures in the eastern Peterson guide we had kicking around the house, I remember thinking that the male Blackburnian Warbler was surely the most beautiful bird in the world.

I’ve never seen one in real life. One day, maybe.

Oh wow. Left arm (our right) at first made me think of a male Hermit Warbler, but the black on the breast is too extensive. And right arm (our left) is pretty tough. I want to say they’re both Parulidae, but I can’t go much further than that. It would be really helpful to have more color, though I realize that might pose difficulties for the canvas. I should check the Peterson and NatGeo guides, though; it could be these are taken from one of those, in which case I could find the actual source images, which would (of course) answer the question immediately.

Can you tell it’s less than a week until the Carpinteria Christmas Count? I’m compulsively identifying birds everywhere.

Study Documents Effects of Road Noises on Migratory Birds

by Ralph Poore

A first-of-its-kind study by Boise State University researchers shows that the negative effects of roads on wildlife are largely because of traffic noise.

Biologists have known that bird populations decline near roads. But pinpointing noise as a cause has been a problem because past studies of the effects of road noise on wildlife were conducted in the presence of the other confounding effects of roads. These include visual disturbances, collisions and chemical pollution, among others.

We present the first study to experimentally apply traffic noise to a roadless area at a landscape scale, thus avoiding the other confounding aspects of roads present in past studies,” said Christopher J. W. McClure, post-doctoral research associate in the Department of Biological Sciences…

newbirder:

The yellow-rumped warblers are out in force in Virginia Beach! They’ve lost their dramatic summer coloring, but they’re easy to identify with their dramatic yellow, well, rumps. I had a lot of fun watching a loose flock of them mix with the summer foliage.
