fishingboatproceeds:

Congratulations to the 2014 Printz Award winners!!!!! (For those who don’t know, the Printz Award is like the Oscars of YA literature.)

Whenever anyone tells you that YA books lack quality or diversity, read some Printz winners. They show that YA fiction is broad and deep and wonderful.

Haha. I totally want for the Potoo to attend PJH. It has no business going there taxonomically, but I just really want to read Sally’s drabble.

nprfreshair: Actress Emma Thompson tells Fresh Air’s Dave…

Sunday, January 26th, 2014

nprfreshair:

Actress Emma Thompson tells Fresh Air’s Dave Davies about a memorable moment filming Sense and Sensibility:

I remember Hugh Grant looking at me and saying, “Are you going to do that?”

I said, “What?”

He said, “Cry like that, all the way through my last speech.”

And I said, “Yeah, what’s the problem?”

And he said, “Well, it’s my last speech! You can’t.”

And I said, “Yeah, but Hugh, it’s funny.” Which is the point: It’s funny. Of course it’s moving, but it’s that, I think, very difficult … but vital balance between something having humor, having wit, but also being moving that I always strain to reach and achieve.

It’s difficult. Alexander Payne is one of the people who achieve that so often in his movies, that you’re laughing and you’re also very moved at the same time. That’s my favorite thing in a movie, actually.

directingfilm: On Thursday evening, I attended a directing…

Saturday, January 25th, 2014

directingfilm:

On Thursday evening, I attended a directing masterclass with Godfrey Reggio, best known as the director of Koyaanisqatsi. The man was damn brilliant. He talked a lot about erasing the traditional foreground of cinema, and focusing on the background

He pointed out that it is within the background that ordinary evil exists. Ordinary evil is the worst kind of evil, because it is evil we simply accept, or as he put it:

The more ordinary something is, the more blind we are to it.

The average racist born into racism never considers himself or herself racist. It is woven into the very fabric of the only life they know.

He continued on this thread by saying:

It’s our behavior that determines the content of our mind. […] We become what we do; we become what we see; we become the routine that we are a part of…

Want to change the world? Start by changing your routine.

Simple ideas, but incredibly powerful.

I kind of wish the trailer didn’t have the VO. But it’s a trailer, so I guess it has to sell it.

I saw it once with a live orchestra performing the Phillip Glass score at Royce Hall. That was awesome.

I was talking with a descendent the other day, and he said he didn’t recall ever seeing it. My bad. Fixing shortly.
