Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

Last Sunday LA shut down car traffic on Venice Blvd. for the CicLAvia “To the Sea” event. Cinematographer Richie Trimble did the ride on a custom-built, 14.5-foot-tall beach cruiser he calls STOOPIDTALL.

Some of my favorite responses from his AMA on reddit:

Q: obvious question, how do you stop?

A: You don’t.

Q: I see some people started to block traffic for you. How nice! How long do you think you rode for? How much “drivetrain loss” is there with a chain that long?!

A: Yes, luckily my whole Los Angelopes Posse was there to help guide through all the bicycles/intersections. The total mileage of the day was just over 20 when my master link fell out and i had to jump off to grab a lightpole. Unfortunately i was still going too fast and only had my hands to guide me down the 12ft to the lovely soft concrete >:[ where i definitely bruised my heel bone and sprained my left ankle. There was a lot of friction on the chain guides and tensioners… Also keep in mind the weight of 6.5 bike chains that your legs are constantly pulling up the bike with every stroke. Not an easy feat.

Q: What was your plan if that bridge got any lower? Just hold on and wait for people to come and help you down?

A: The only thing i could think of was if it got to low, to push up with my back and hold myself there til people could surround the bike and support it so i could climb down. SO SCARY.

edwardspoonhands:

THIS. IS. INFURIATING.

I know that Good Morning America isn’t news, I know that they don’t matter, and I know that it doesn’t matter what they think about online video. But after watching this puffy hatchet job, I could not not post about it. Let’s just go through this point by point.

  1. Jenna Marbles is the “Queen of Clicks.” This is a seemingly innocuous phrase, but it’s indicative of the attitude here, making Jenna’s success not about the significance of what she does, but about a meaningless activity that other people do “clicking.” It removes all significance from the interaction people have with Jenna. This is what we call a backhanded compliment.
  2. “So Many teens and tweens hanging on her every word.” This is GMA’s attempt at attempting to make this story relevant to the people (moms) who watch their show. Except they miss the point that MOST OF THOSE MOMS WATCH JENNA MARBLES! They have no idea…NOT IDEA of Jenna’s reach because (apparently) they have NEVER USED AN INTERNET.
  3. Which is pretty insane considering that apparently she has “over a billion followers” on YouTube. This is a fact that can be checked and found wanting with a very limited understanding of reality (never mind the internet) since only 750 million people in the world SPEAK ENGLISH.
  4. “She may just be the most famous person you’ve never heard of.” Another backhanded compliment.
  5. Next we compare her facebook to JLaw and her instagram to Oprah…more attempts to connect with the issues moms in America really care about.
  6. “And all for making videos about, well, nothing.” REALLY?! DID YOU WATCH ANY OF THE VIDEOS?! First, comedy doesn’t have to be about something. But more importantly, Jenna’s videos aren’t about nothing, they’re about culture and sexism and growing up. Hiding in amongst all that “nothing” are often poignant insights.

And now we arrive at the interview portion, which is the most frustrating for me, and has to be much worse for Jenna. They intersperse Jenna’s comments with the most inane and out of context clips they can find, and then ask Jenna a total of TWO QUESTIONS.

1. What does it feel like to get a bunch of views? Which is innocuous.

…and the kicker…

2. Do you think you deserve to have as many fans as you do?

Which is just…makes me…on fire…flames!

The only way to ask that question is if you, as an interviewer, have made your mind up that the person does NOT deserve their success. And in the end, that’s how the entire segment feels to me, a bunch of people making fun of a creator who they are threatened by and who they do not understand. And of course they’re threatened by it, Jenna Marbles (on her own, with a cheap camera) can make a video that gets more viewed by more people than an episode of Good Morning America.

Instead of talking about anything interesting or criticizing Jenna for legitimate reasons (which they could have done) GMA spent five minutes making fun of one of the most influential creators that exists in the world right now. But what’s worse is they didn’t criticize her for legitimate reasons, they made fun of her for NOT MATTERING…for not being important…for being a meaningless cultural blip that they’re certain will just disappear. You wanna talk about something ridiculous…it’s you GMA, not Jenna.

Again, I don’t care that GMA doesn’t care about online video. I’m happy flying under the cultural radar for another few years, doing interesting things without legacy media paying attention (or, even with them actively attempting to marginalize us.) But I couldn’t watch this load of BS without commenting on it.

So Jenna, while I don’t agree with everything you’ve ever said, you absolutely deserve your success. You are innovative, intelligent, and hilarious. GMA is acting like you’re the new girl in school that all the cute boys like better than them and, guess what, you are.

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. This would be the “then they laugh at you” stage.

Hank’s commentary is all awesome, but my favorite part was when he calls Good Morning America “legacy media”. Definitely replaces “mainstream media” in all utterances by me from now on.

58/365

For some odd reason, there are a lot crows at the parking lot of my job. Well I have no idea if it is a crow, or a raven… But it makes a pretty nice picture against the grey sky.

Smallish tail, lack of apparent shagginess around the head and neck, relatively small beak: I’m thinking crow.

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

Chances are slim, both because there are many people who’ve requested it and because I’m a stubborn little fucker (or so I understand from one of the previous requesters) who likes using it himself.

You can maximize your chances by explaining in as entertaining a manner as possible why you want it and what you would do with it.

Thanks and good luck!

David Roberts – The Golden Tower [1833] on Flickr.

David Roberts was one of the British romantic painters who travelled through Spain, capturing images that best represented the landscape and picturesque aspects of the country, especially in Andalusia. Here, he offers an image of the Guadalquivir River where it flows through Seville, with the Torre de Oro (Golden Tower) as the protagonist. The comings and goings of the boats on the water or berthed on the banks perpetuate the exotic atmosphere that romantic outsiders saw in Spain. This work entered the Prado Museum collection in 1943.

Remains of the Day by AdamBurton:

“Rhossili Bay in the Gower is a very beautiful beach. The only trouble with the place is theres golden sand as far as the eye can see, and little in the way of rocks on the beach to use as foreground. The solution to this is the wreck of the ship Helvetia. Its remains lie stranded high on the beach among small pools of water.”

Web series to fill the v o i d – (part 1)

Monday, April 22nd, 2013

illuminating-lbd:

So I’ve been researching. (Which mostly means sitting on tumblr asking for suggestions from other people. So thanks guys!) And here are some awesome web shows you should check out while you’re waiting for Pemberley Digital’s next big thing!

Lizzie Bennet Diaries
Seriously, if you see this post and haven’t watched this show… what are you doing!?

Inspired by the LBD

Autobiography of Jane Eyre
Four episodes in, and it is very appealing! These vlogs are updated weekly and in comparison to the LBD, it has an unpolished, less produced, intimate feel to it… which actually works in favour of it.

Emma’s Journal
Yes, this is a version of Emma by Jane Austen! It’s updated twice a week, but I believe there are only 2 episodes to go (18 episodes all up). The characters have twitter accounts, although only a couple are very active. Quite enjoyable to watch and pass the time, although there are one or two actors who don’t quite get there for me, and I don’t feel the Knightly/Emma relationship either. But I still really enjoyed it.

Nick Carraway Chronicles
This one hasn’t started yet, but it will be an adaptation of The Great Gatsby, and the characters are already active on twitter! Their links are in the information video description.

Featuring actors from the LBD

Squaresville (Mary Kate Wiles)
Squaresville is just… awesome. It’ll make you laugh, it’ll make you cry. Just watch it. Plus it has Mary Kate Wiles. No brainer. Now in its 2nd season.

Hipsterhood (Julia Cho + Daniel Vincent Gordh coming soon)
I LOVE this show. A celebration of hipsters. Enough said. Only one season so far, but Julio Cho guest stars, plus a second season is coming soon with Daniel Vincent Gordh as a guest star and Julia Cho directing.

Lookbook (Wes Aderhold + Bernie Su)
This one doesn’t live on youtube, but on lookbook.nu. There’s been 4 episodes so far. The life of a fashion blogger. This is one of Bernie Su’s projects and stars Wes Aderhold! It kind of has soap opera melodramatics going on, but it’s addictive!

(Character) (Laura Spencer)
Look! It’s Laura Spencer! That means you have to watch. Laura plays such a different character to Jane Bennet in this, it really shows her versatility. There’s one full season, but they are working on a second now.

Coffee Shop Squatters (Laura Spencer)
More Laura Spencer! One season so far, another to come.

School of Thrones (Mary Kate Wiles and Maxwell Glick)
This one has 3 episodes. It’s Game of Thrones…but in high school.

I hope this provides hours of entertainment! Part 2 to come later, featuring web series unrelated to LBD. But we can’t hold that against them, right?
