M57, The ring Nebula, was also superb in the scope. We also viewed the moon's terminator at high power. We saw mountain tops peaking out of the terminator dark areas. We also viewed M5, & M51. After I got home, I took my own 5.1" Short Tube Newtonian to observe the areas around Cygnus & Aquilla. I viewed M52 & other star groupings as well as many wide double stars in the Milky Way. Then this morning, I observed dark sunspot, AR2833, near the center of the sun's face. It was very impressive.

Last evening, my brother Anthony & I visited the Westport Astronomical Society's observatory which houses a 25" & 14" telescope. We viewed along the moon's terminator & saw some amazing things with these two giant scopes. There was a rill going along one of the craters that I never saw before. The mountain ranges & craters jumped at you as if you are flying at low altitude on the moon. We also got to view both the ISS & for the first time, we viewed the new Chinese space station as it also flew over. It was a little dimmer than the ISS. What a great night.

In the center of Mercury's waning gibbous disc, we were able to see a large dark area which I believe is the Colaris Basin. We also observed globular clusters M13 & M92 which were very impressive. We also observed the core of galaxy M85. The double star Algebia in Leo was easy to split & we were also able to split the Double Double in Lira. During the day, I also observed the sunspot complex AR2882 on the Sun's face. I was able to see two spots & plenty of facula. It was a great day night double header of astronomy.

I just finished observing the sun with my solar telescope. There are two sunspot groups with plenty of facula on the sun's face. AR2816 has grown since yesterday & it is now approaching the center of the sun's face. AR2817 is about to rotate out of the sun's face in a couple of days. These two sunspot groups are really impressive!

This evening, my brother Anthony & I did some nice observing with our computerized 5" MAK. We were able to view M97, The Owl Nebula. We also looked at Galaxies M82 & M104. However, we decided to closely examine M42 & M3. We used a strong Televue eyepiece with a nebula filter to inspect the Orion Nebula. This turned out to be one of our best views ever of the Orion Nebula. We then moved to the belt star Mintaka where we saw more of the nebula in Orion. We finally moved the scope to M78 where more of the nebulosity was. We then examined globular cluster M3 & what we saw was some nice speckling with it. we also viewed Mellotte 111 open cluster as well as M41 & some double stars. It turned out to be a great evening.

Alpha Boo (Arcturus) (Star, in Bootes)
Observer: Michael Amato (e-mail: abigmick@aol.com)

Light pollution: moderate   Transparency: fair   Seeing: fair
Time: Tue Apr 6 02:15:00 2021 UT   Obs. no.: 2243

Last evening, I pointed my telescope towards Arcturus while it was high up. Its yellow-orange color really blew me away. The color also means this beautiful star is nearing the end of its life.
