Tumblr should stop making users watch horror movie ads against their will

This is an older post, but this is exactly the problem I’m coming across now. I use tumblr as an escape and most of what I follow is silly, happy, or pretty content. I can’t do horror. Horror should not be placed on our dashboards with no easy way to hide it on mobile. The fact that this has been a problem for over two years is ridiculous!

Oh, we’re putting screamers up as sponsored posts now staff? Not cool, especially on mobile where sensitive people can’t block them. We don’t just block things because we’re being pissy about ads in our dash. It’s because of shit like this. We simply can’t trust you to do your part in keeping our dashes a safe place from triggering ads. (I’m referring to the ad from The Visit I just saw.)

Oh, by the way, fuck you Sinister 2 marketing team for putting animated gifs of horror I very much do not want to see in my dash

I will not see your movie, sinistermovie, and I’m pissed off at staff for violating their own Community Guidelines by making me view your deeply disturbing content.

Yo, lies. I just did a tumblr advisory panel specifically about a horror movie ad. I hope they listened to me.

Cool! Can you share any more details? I don’t actually know what a “tumblr advisory panel” even is. But if it means they are exposed to your views about horror movie ads, I’m for it.

Thanks.

Dang. I guess it must be randomised which ads they have you evaluate, because I got a pair of GAP ads. When I saw this post I logged into the email account I gave them, which I hardly ever remember to do, because I was hoping I could tell them how much I hate horror movie ads, but no dice. I hope that a vast, overwhelming majority of the panelists given the horror movie ads to assess made clear how unacceptable they were.

Sorry this is days late.

I looks like they ate the link in my original post. Here it is. I don’t even remember how I joined – either they emailed me directly or it was a link from the staff tumblr? Regardless I always take the opportunity to tell the powers that be what my feelings are, hoping I can skew the results.

Anyway, re: the horror movie. I rated all the options low and then when was given a blank text box tried to explain the issue was not with the specific ads (which were actually rather arty and not explicit) but the horror ads in general and the violation of terms and lack of blocking and whathave you. It was days ago. So. Who knows if they’ll listen, but theoretically I figure that’s the best avenue to air grievances hoping they’ll listen.

Hey! I’m doing an Answer Time tomorrow, June 16th at 2pm (Eastern).

I will be answering ALL of your questions (or as many as I can get through tomorrow). NOTHING is off limits (probably). I’m EXCITED!!

Suggested questions:

  • What’s it like working at Tumblr?
  • Do you still write code?
  • Is graphic design your passion?
  • Why is it called “Tumblr”?
  • What kind of anime are you into?
  • Fix messaging

hmu :D

Why have horror movie advertisers been allowed to violate Tumblr’s community guidelines by posting images of gore and human remains in user’s dashboards with no way to opt out?

Details here. Thanks.

Especially on the mobile app. I can block them on my laptop but I can’t on my phone and now they’ve been placing sponsored ads for that goddamn Poltergeist movie on the top of my dash so every time I open the app I see their ads and flinch.

Yeah. I noticed that, too.

Your ad policy is problematic, staff.

I despise these more than anything. Is there any way to get rid of them on mobile? :(

You could give the XKit app a try. I stopped using it because its performance was noticeably slower than the official app, and because there appeared to be fewer sponsored posts for horror movies happening, but with the new campaign for the Poltergeist movie starting up maybe it’s time to go back to it.

I’m not sure the XKit app actually filters out sponsored posts, though. If you try it and it works please let me know. Thanks!

Look. I’m not stupid. I know I’m the product, but why the fuck are they so tone deaf in their marketing to me? I’m insulted more than anything. When a targeted ad appeals to me, I notice and applaud the marketers and whatever metrics made it all happen.

I’ve been here more than half a decade. You know what I like, you know what I post.

This is base and offensive. I give you so much, tumblr. Try a little harder.

I have to assume I’m getting the “BUY BEFORE YOU DIE” ad because I’m one of the Tumblr olds.

Seriously, staff, if this is what the new ad people they hired to help integrate sponsored ads better into Tumblr’s culture is coming up with, I feel like nobody is getting what they want.

Hell, I can’t believe there’s been two different changes this week that make me not want to read my dashboard. If there’s a tipping point for “I don’t want to be here,” I feel like they’re edging very, very close. (Or, I’m just being really melodramatic about a sketchy life-insurance ad.)

On the plus side:

BUY BEFORE YOU DIE is kitschy enough to be actually funny, at least the first few times. And it’s not a horrific image of a swaying corpse, like that ad for The Conjuring. Because jesus, tumblr, w the actual f.

On the minus side:

There do seem to be a lot of those kitschy framed ads.

Anyway, we’re product, not customers. Tumblr is selling us, and the tub of margarine in the supermarket doesn’t get a vote about who puts it in the cart. Keep your eyes peeled for the next cool platform to come along, and be ready to migrate when enough of the cool kids have made the leap. Or we can become our parents, hanging out on tumblrbook while the next generation makes fun of us with our tags and our gifs.

And… another horror movie sponsored post

Wednesday, February 11th, 2015

Pros:

– It’s tagged #horror

– It’s actually fairly tame (worst thing is a tight closeup of Olivia Wilde screaming in the final gif)

Cons:

– Tight closeup of Olivia Wilde screaming.

– It’s in my dash against my wishes, and those wishes aren’t just “don’t bother me while I’m using your free blogging platform”, they’re more like, “I’ve curated a horror-free dashboard environment intentionally, because I have a strong negative reaction to disturbing images of movie horror, and that choice is something that a humane, ethical blogging platform would support”.

I wish I could block sponsored posts. I hate seeing ads for meat and movies that condone domestic violence and basically every single sponsored post is something I never want to see. Can we at least get a “is this relevant to your interests?” Button that hides the posts we don’t want to see and shows us, idk, a new array of shitty sponsored ads??? I guess????

I’m surprised this isn’t a bigger issue on tumblr. Horror movies can be extremely triggering for some of us, and I hate seeing them on my dash or on the radar yet tumblr keeps forcing them on me. Sometimes I just have to close tumblr altogether. I don’t care so much about ads when they’re for some stupid clothing brand I don’t care about or insurance or whatever, but showing me a scary gif of scenes from a horror movie against my will is rude. I don’t know why these studios act like they don’t know the difference between showing me gifs of a corny teen comedy I don’t intend to see and throwing gory or supernatural creepy imagery at me and forcing me to see it. I even have tried blocking that movie’s blog, and I still have to see their sponsored content. Please staff do something about this. Allow us to dismiss ads we don’t want to see or close it after a few seconds or something, or allow us to specify what kinds of ads we’re comfortable with. Just as they don’t show horror movie ads on Disney Channel to protect the children.

That’s a good point about the Disney Channel. Tumblr makes a big deal about how young its users are; it’s a sought-after demographic for many advertisers, including horror movies. Tumblr says users have to be at least 13, but the site don’t appear to do anything to enforce that, such that their actual user base probably includes millions of users who are 12 or younger.

Microblogging has only been around a few years, so it doesn’t have the rules that exist on TV and in movie theaters to prevent age-inappropriate ads from being shown to young viewers. The only thing standing in the way of that is the moral sense of Tumblr’s decision-makers. Unfortunately, Tumblr is mostly run by people in their 20s who don’t have kids, and their moral sense appears to have a blind spot in that area.

There are some signs that the situation my be (slowly) getting (slightly) better. These days the ads are usually tagged with #horror. Tumblr added a guideline that advertisers not depict dead bodies. And the latest batch I’ve seen have been toned down; they’re more suggestive than outright horrific. Since Tumblr doesn’t talk about the issue publicly, it’s hard to know if that last development is a new policy or just a choice by the advertiser for a single campaign. But one can hope.

tl;dr: Tumblr’s horror movie ads suck. More here.

Dear staff,

I understand the need for sponsored posts, the beast must be fed somehow. BUT!!! Personally, I find it disgusting, disturbing, and down right insensitive to be scrolling down my dash and see a GIF of slabs of ribs flopping onto a grill, courtesy of tgifridays

I’m sure my other vegetarian, vegan, and non meat eating friends would also appreciate not seeing it, considering most of us have taken special care to make sure the likelyhood of seeing nastyass meat eaters wet dreams on our dash is slim to none.

Is there a way to have people select the sponsored posts they might be interested in seeing? And block the ones they definitely 100% do not ever EVER EEEVVVEERRR want to see? If there isn’t, lets try and make that happen because I am really sick and tired to being bombarded by this shite.

sincerely,

Claire

As with me and the horror movies, Tumblr created their own predicament here by making the site compellingly good at letting users curate exactly the mix of content they wish to see. We users work hard to construct that mix. We value it. We feel protective of it.

Being able to choose whom to follow is Tumblr’s superpower. Sponsored posts, at least as currently implemented, are kryptonite.
