wizzardhowl:

space sweepers is everything i could’ve asked for: found space family with a little magical girl, a bunch of stupid former delinquents that now fight for the greater good and adorable adopted robots that care for their friends!

the story was fun and although it’s a heavily action-based film, it still found a way to slow down and let the characters have small moments together. i am obsessed with the fact that everyone spoke their native languages and could understand each other thanks to the live translator, because it meant that for once (for the first time maybe) a space opera got to be diverse in a way that made sense, not just alien stuff. it just felt so welcoming in a way i haven’t seen many futuristic movies be. i loved captain badass jang, uncle tiger, soft sad daddy taeho and bubs a whole lot. there’s a lot of things being said about bubs now but i like her character so much, she just sits outside and reads rilke. who’s doing it like her.

most of the reviews i’ve read so far have been… negative and i understand that there are a few plot holes here and there (they never explain why the villain was poisoned, or why they couldn’t just inject nanobots in other kids to see if it worked like with kotnim) but i feel like the charm of this movie were the characters and their relationships, not the story itself. it has a heart and i think that shines through, even if the plot was sometimes a little confusing.

i’m genuinely overwhelmed by how much i loved this movie, it made me realize i haven’t watched a lot of space families in cinema since endgame ruined gotg and i missed it a lot. such a waste that it only lasts 2 hours because i would’ve loved an entire show like that, it had so much potential.

y’all don’t get it, kot nim called bubs ‘unni’, not lady but big sister and the wholesomeness of this trans robot being recognized by a child not only as a woman but as her family is killing me

okay so for anyone who hasn’t seen space sweepers (2021), they did something really cool with language — because it’s a futuristic scifi movie, all the characters have in-ear instant translators, so characters in the same scene will all be speaking different languages and they all just understand. the main cast of like five people is korean, but every other character all speaks a different language

i rewatched the movie and this time i kept count of all the different languages, and i heard:

  • korean
  • english
  • spanish
  • nigerian pidgin (it took forever for me to figure out what specific language karum speaks)
  • mandarin
  • russian
  • arabic
  • danish
  • french
  • filipino

and i just think that’s neat 😁

iffervescent:

Everyone should watch Space Sweepers right now.

Reasons?

  • Janitors-in-space Found Family vs evil space capitalist who is Definitely Not Elon Musk
  • There’s a trans robot
  • Side note: the robot is both very good and very bad at make-up
  • It reunites Song Joong-ki and Kim Tae-Ri from Mr Sunshine, possibly one of the best kdramas ever
  • Although it’s korean cinema it’s one of the most international films I’ve ever seen. There’s like seven different languages flying around
  • Super adorable child actor
  • Arcs of loss, grieving, redemption, sacrifice and what it means to be good
  • Richard Armitage
  • Did I mention the robot? The robot’s super cool
  • Go watch it

officialheroesofolympus:

Just watched space sweepers and one detail that made me so profoundly, inexplicably happy was the casual way the characters all interacted with one another regardless of what language they spoke. I mean this is the first sci-fi themed movie I can remember where people of all different languages just casually talk to one another in their own respective tongues?? Like?? Maybe that’s the nerd in me but that’s so cool I loved that

Agreed. There’s a lot that’s fun and amazing about the movie, but the thing that’s the most original is the way they weave together polyglot dialog. I assume there’s a version of this experience for Korean speakers (or whatever), but for an English speaker it quickly establishes that in this world there are many languages being spoken, everyone has real-time translation devices to help them keep up, and it WORKS. I mean, not just in-world. It works as a storytelling device. It fixes one of the most persistent artifacts that pulls me out of nearly every sci-fi future I’ve ever seen: language that hasn’t believably evolved. The future almost always has everyone speaking late-20th/early-21st-century American English, even when there’s no reason for them to be doing that.

But in the English version of this movie everything non-English is subtitled, and characters have their own specific languages they use. And in the middle of a scene you’ll realize that besides all the Korean you’re also hearing English, Spanish, whatever, and everyone just rolls with it. It’s not explained via idiot lecture; it’s just shown in the first scene when Tae-ho is bartering at the morgue and the person he’s dealing with is complaining (in English) about her broken translator.

It’s really great as science fiction. And yeah, it’s still space opera. The movie descends directly from things like The Fifth Element and Star Wars as much as, or more, than 2001. Space is still crowded and noisy, and the physics in the action sequences are more about what looks and feels exciting than about making sense. But I don’t care. The characters are lovable rogues and I was totally invested.

A+ would recommend.
