Sigur Ros play Happy Birthday, then hilariously fuck up Hoppípolla.

(St. Paul, MN – April 3 2013)

image

I’d heard about this (the singing happy birthday, then messing up the opening to “Hoppípolla” and having to restart), but hadn’t seen the video yet. But of course it’s on YouTube, because everything that happens at any decent-sized concert these days is on YouTube from 17 different angles.

The part that makes it funny (besides Goggi’s universal “wtf” gesture) is that Jónsi is notoriously such a perfectionist, while always insisting that he’s not in charge (because nobody is in charge; the process must be organic). But really, he’s in charge. And after he screws up the lyric (I’m pretty sure it was he who screwed up), it looks like he’s turning to each member of the band in turn, asking what went wrong, and each of them just grins and points back at him.

It reminds me of the funny moment during “Boy Lilikoi” in the duet Jónsi did with Nico Muhly at Bethnal Green, when he (Jónsi) made a mistake on guitar and the camera caught his “oops” face. Because Muhly is classically trained, and Jónsi very much isn’t, and as awesome as he is, there’s an adorable dorkiness that comes through in his performance sometimes. I mean, he’s perfect. But he’s not perfect.

Heh.

Something I’ve come to believe quite strongly in the last few years is this: When an artist (any artist — painter, musician, author, actor, whatever) connects with a fandom, it’s like they speak a common language. If I don’t understand that language, that’s on me, not them. I have no more business mocking or belittling an artist or that artist’s fans based on my failure to appreciate that art any more than I should be mocking and belittling speakers of Greek or Swahili for sharing thoughts and ideas I can’t understand.

There are people in my life who I care about who nevertheless don’t understand why I like (for example) some YA fiction, or a Web series aimed primarily at an audience of young women, or bands like fragment., Godspeed You! Black Emperor, or Sigur Rós. And for their own particular reasons they sometimes, in their own particular ways, go as far as mocking and belittling the things I love, which sometimes feels like they’re mocking and belittling me. “Oh my God! You’re always on Tumblr talking to dumb girls about this stuff! Your music is so lame! It’s embarrassing!”

Well, yeah, from a certain outside perspective I’m sure it seems weird and unintelligible. But I’m not going to stop. Or at least, I’m not going to stop just because someone doesn’t understand Swahili. People who begin from a belief that something is unworthy of their attention, and never test that belief by actually examining that thing with an open mind, are the ones who should be embarrassed. Mocking something you don’t understand isn’t cool, or if it is, then cool isn’t something I’m willing to be.

I really liked this review of Wednesday’s Sigur Rós show. Last night, Thursday, they played in Kansas City, MO. That’s just 1,707 miles, 15 days, from the Santa Barbara Bowl.

Sigur Rós played in St. Paul tonight. 16 days, 2,016 miles to Santa Barbara.

Closer…

(Well, technically, slightly farther than last night in Chicago, distance-wise. But still closer in time.)

After only doing 13 songs the previous night at the US tour’s debut in Washington DC, they did 16 songs at last night’s show at Madison Square Garden. They did all 15 songs that they did at the London show that ended the European tour, and added “Hrafntinna”, a song I don’t recognize, so maybe it’s going to be on the upcoming Kveikur album?

There’s a YouTube video of them performing “Hrafntinna” (which Google Translate tells me is “obsidian” in Icelandic) at the show in Porto, Portugal on February 13, 2013.

Sigur Ros, Kveikur (live on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon)

Basically however you say this is freaking awesome in Icelandic is my take on the performance.  Also is Fallon’s pronunciation of “Kveikur” (basically qu-ak-er) how you really say it?  If so I just learned something because I was not pronouncing it correctly at all.

HOLY FUCK

I was checking out setlists from the European leg of the tour last night; the most-recent one at setlist.fm is from March 9 in London:

  1. Yfirborð
  2. Ný Batterí
  3. Vaka
  4. Sæglópur
  5. Fljótavík
  6. E-bow
  7. Varúð
  8. Hoppípolla
  9. Með Blóðnasir
  10. Olsen Olsen
  11. Kveikur
  12. Festival
  13. Brennisteinn

Encore:

  1. Glósóli
  2. Popplagið

I gather the band has been taking a few weeks off, but now they’re in New York (where they played on Jimmy Fallon last night), and the US leg of the tour starts Monday.

Public Service Announcement: Does this sound familiar? It should; you hear it all the time. It’s “Hoppípolla”, by Sigur Rós.

Places you might have heard it:

If you don’t speak Icelandic (or Hopelandic) it’s fun to read a translation of the lyrics.

I now return you to your regular Tumblr content.
