Mary Kate Wiles: The Audition Chronicles: Part Four!

I loved this so much. I’m sure Yulin will be posting it “officially” soon, and I’ll reblog it then. But something about the layers of self-revelation and honesty, the direct addressing of the difficult gray area that people like Yulin and Mary Kate occupy as creators, even while not being direct at all, because obv., it’s about a cat, worked really well.
A metaphor can be truthful in a way that direct representation sometimes struggles to be. It’s a collaborative performance, with the listener an active participant. It feels intimate, like a shared secret.
I don’t know. I also loved it because it reminded me of this:

The Making of SPORE – Part One: Pre-Production – Behind the Scenes Vlog
This was my favorite part of the video. Not so much because of what she’s saying; she’s talking about how she’s back at The Americana looking for costume options for Spore, and how the shooting schedule has been pushed back. And she’s very much caught up in the details.
But she’s walking past that big poster for the last Hobbit movie. And it’s such a cool moment. Because more than a decade ago, growing up in Fayetteville, it was seeing Fellowship for the first time that started her on this journey. And now the Rings franchise is ending, and for a fan it’s sad, but look: There’s a new beginning. The road goes ever on.
Because she’s doing it. Not just acting, but creating. Bringing together people like Taylor, Whitney, Miles, Zack, and Ashley, inspiring them, getting lost in the details, the thousand decisions, pushing past setbacks and doubt and exhaustion, all to take this completely insubstantial thing, this tiny little idea, this dream, and turn it into something real.
And it’s badass. But if you look past the badassery you can still see the little girl from Fayetteville, and the determination that carried her from that moment to this. And I don’t know. I just thought it was cool.

I loved this behind-the-scenes video about the making of Spore; maybe even more than the actual film. That probably says something about me and my thing about meta. Or whatever it is that makes reality programming in general as compelling as it is.
Anyway, so cool seeing MK & friends making this come together.

I liked this. I’ve been a fan of sci fi since I was young, so it’s fun to see people I’m a fan of and haven’t previously associated with it doing it.
Things I especially liked:
There have been some really good sci fi films lately (along with plenty of not-so-good). I really liked Edge of Tomorrow and Interstellar, for example. In terms of lower-budget/fewer-effects films, I’m a fan of Shane Carruth’s Primer and Upstream Color, and Duncan Jones’ Moon and Source Code. Spore reminded me a little of those. I realize it’s a much smaller thing, but I like how it worked around its limitations to make something that was cool and spooky and hinted at a larger world.
Thanks to everyone who made it happen.

Then Freya stirred and spoke with a clear voice, indeed with a voice clearer and more powerful than Samuela had ever heard her use, and it rose above the throb and turmoil of Mount Doom, ringing in the roof and walls.
‘I have come,’ she said. ‘But I do not choose now to do what I came to do. I will not do this deed. The Ring is mine!‘ And suddenly, as she set it on her finger, she vanished from Samuela’s sight.

Favorite characters: Cecilia
“For one shot in the film, we were looking at photos of MK to use as Charlie’s cell phone photo ID for Zoe. We have a metric crapton of photos of MK, but I was finding it almost impossible to find a photo where she looked like Zoe. She was either clearly Lily, clearly Zelda, or clearly another character/herself.
“Something that impresses me about working with such great actors like Sean Persaud and Mary Kate Wiles is that they manage to give each character they play a totally different presence and energy, to the point that even finding an old photo that captures a new character can be kind of difficult. Yay actors!”

EDIT: I have been informed that this is a book and I should probably read it cause it sounds cool.
Okay yulinkuang, the tumblr fates have spoken. You need to film marykatewiles to an excerpt from Fangirl.
seanpersaud would also make a pretty great Levi I’m just saying.
