I was a fan of The Comeback 10 years ago. I cringed at Valerie Cherish, but was interested enough by the meta (always a sucker for meta) to keep with it. When the finale delivered the message that, in retrospect, the whole show had been building up to, it really hit home with me, and has informed how I view reality TV ever since.

Reviewing both the original show and the revival that premiered yesterday on HBO, Tim Goodman in The Hollywood Reporter was harshly negative, complaining that The Comeback isn’t as funny as other cringe comedies like The Office or Extras. And it’s true that those shows were funnier. But I think The Comeback is trying to do something different.

The gif above shows the exact point in the premiere when I started welling up tears. Because it was clear what was coming.

“I don’t know what that was. But I’ve gotta have more of it. Is that weird?”

Yeah, kind of. But here we are.
