I decided to read Fangirl without knowing anything about it because I loved Eleanor & Park so fiercely it didn’t matter. I just wanted more Rainbow words.

And here’s what you should know. I’m a certified member of the Tumblr Geriatric Ward. You know, the group that secretly fangirls on Tumblr but doesn’t breathe a word of it to people in real life. Or IRL, as it were. Squees and swoons and especially reading fanfics (especially) – that is all very very private and very very secret.

Little did I know that Rainbow the Great had cracked open the locked safe and exposed our little secret to the….well, I don’t know. Are all readers of Rainbow so deeply entwined in the Tumblr universe? Do we all have blogs dedicated to one smile, one show, one heart-pounding OTP? (Mine is Klaine, natch.)

Every page so far (I’m on 105) has me gasping and shushing and peaking over the top of my book to make sure no one is watching. Because it’s a book. About fan fiction. About SLASH fan fiction. About Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy slash fan fiction. And yes, she’s changed the names for all the reasons you should but heavens to Betsy, can you believe this?

Maybe it’s just me. Maybe I’m the only one blushing and side-eyeing and feeling exposed.

And maybe I don’t care. Because Cath is all of us and Wren is a puzzler and Levi needs his cheeks smushed and Reagan is our BFF and so on and so forth.

I’m on page 105 and I am so in. So terribly IN.

But please don’t tell anyone IRL.

It turns out it is not necessary to be into fanfiction, or Harry Potter, or be a first-year-at-college introverted English major fangirl yourself in order to relate to and get caught up in Fangirl. Because I’m none of those things.

And yet, here I am.
