Reblogging for anyone who’s disappointed about the lack of stripey socks in today’s AoJE episode. (Though I note there was prominent Rochester boot modeling, for those who are into that. And I think at this point we have to assume they concealed stripey socks.)

Hi Alysson! Question- In Jane’s world, we know that she’s aware of Lizzie and her videos. However, I’m wondering; in this universe, is she a fan of the adaptation, or is Lizzie just a regular person who had a vlog? In other words, does Pride and Prejudice exist in the AOJE-verse? This is probably a silly question, I’m just curious.

Thursday, November 7th, 2013

Great question! We’ve always tried to align ourselves with the information Bernie Su’s about his in/out world theories. To paraphrase wildly, he answered this question by speculating that P&P doesn’t necessarily exist in Lizzie’s world (but adaptations of P&P do) ex: Lizzie says that Bridget Jones Diary is one of her favourite films.

We’ve tried to keep to that idea, and have avoided ‘Jane Eyre’ existing in Jane’s world (I imagine it would be fairly traumatic to stumble into a book store and find a book with her name on it, and then upon reading it discover that she was living in some kind of ‘Truman Show’ parallel of a 19th century novel), but Jane watches ‘Sound of Music’ and I imagine the film ‘Rebecca’ still would exist for her.

Since we’ve put Jane in Lizzie’s world more or less, P&P does not exist for Jane either.

Furthermore, in Jane’s world Lizzie was a regular YouTuber. A person who vlogged, and doesn’t vlog anymore. We felt Jane would be attracted to the family aspect of LBD, as well as the equality and respect in Lizzie/Darcy’s relationship. A lot of people have asked if Jane is watching Emma (and while some of our team definitely are (including myself)) Jane cannot for two reasons.
A) All videos Emma posts are out of world [X]
B) Even if Emma did post her videos – Jane would see Emma as a completely separate you-tuber, and probably wouldn’t watch them, because:
1) Jane would see a person similar to Blanche
2) Jane would be frustrated by the ‘approval’ aspect of Emma. It would seem very Johanna-like to her that everything/everyone should be approved by one self-selected individual.
3) Jane is disinterested with the commercial aspect of weddings.

From an objective point of view, I think Jane would admire Emma’s loyalty (as well as Knightley’s) but Jane is quick to distrust people (as might we all be in her shoes), though she has a penchant for changing her mind about people.

I’m going to miss Johanna!

I’m going to miss her too. Today’s episode was very different in tone, wasn’t it? It was written by Ryan Bright, who previously wrote Charades (ep. 22) and Babies (ep. 29). I take it he’s a humor kind of guy, since the three episodes he’s written are the ones that struck me as the funniest, and today’s, which he also directed, probably goes the farthest of any episode I can remember in terms of going for full-on comedy.

All previous episodes were directed by Nessa. I’m curious about the backstory behind Ryan doing this one, and wonder if there will be more director substitutions going forward, or it this was a one-time thing.

omg now i wanna make a really dope tumblr for edgar allan poe. Nothing to do with a tell tale vlog just i could do such a good job of that and i oh man that’d be great

Hm. The universes would have to merge somehow.

Jane follows Lizzie on Twitter, so she’s in-world with LBD/WtS/EA. Poe certainly looks period, but then there’s the camera, and Lenore’s modern speech, so I suppose we could posit obsessive never-leaves-his-study historical cosplay on his part to make him modern, too. So then he could be in-world with Jane, and she could just happen to run into him. Hm. Maybe at some future point in the story she could be looking for another nanny situation, and come across a Craigslist ad for Poe’s Lenore-replacement.

Or, going another way, since we’ve already got supernatural stuff explicitly in-world in ATTV, Jane could be sucked back in time Lost-in-Austen-style, or Poe propelled forward a la Sleepy Hollow, and there you are.

I’m not suggesting any of this should happen canonically. But I’d definitely read and enjoy the fic.

Period Piece

A friend of mine, Lena D, played Nessa and I this song around the same time that Jane Eyre was starting up. She was talking about turning it into a music video for You-Tube. And obviously, that’s a freaking awesome idea! So we encouraged the shit out of it.

And Ta-Da – the final project is AMAZING!

AOJE fans will recognize Lucas Blaney (Warren) in the video, and I’m actually breifly in there as an extra (1:07 approx) since I could only stay for a few hours on the second filming day.

Headcanon: Jane is checking Twitter for updates by @Pilotsthoughts, oblivious to the fact that she’s in a school hallway. And a music video.

Lights & Shadows: You know the bit with the dancers?:

matterofawesome:

I read a comment on youtube earlier that mentioned something I hadn’t noticed: The lyrics of the song they are dancing to has a direct quote from the book, matter of fact from the fortune teller scene: “The eagerness of a listener quickens the tongue of a narrator”, which is something Jane says…

Said it before; saying it again: I love it when AoJE bends the boundaries of what an adaptation webseries can do. That dance video in the middle of yesterday’s craziness was wonderful and incomprehensible and perfect. I watched it on my phone in the Solana Beach train terminal, feeling like I was part of something weird and silly and a little subversive. And like I said: loved it.

Okay. Cone of No-Meta descending again.

inkingideas:

Also- shout out to my uncle who is the artist of the painting in the background :)

It was just a small thing during an episode that had many things I loved, but I thought it was very effective the way the painting was partially hidden (by Adele, then by Jane) at the beginning, then was revealed when Jane sat down and she and Rochester were alone. Because it wasn’t until then that I realized what it showed: an abstract female figure in a suggestive pose.

In effect the painting became another character in the scene, hovering between Jane and Rochester. Its bold colors and suggestion of the “male gaze” added to the sexual tension, underscoring Rochester’s interest in Jane, his repressed passion, even as he struggled to keep it under wraps.

I’ve made a conscious effort not to analyze too much. From the beginning I was drawn in by the show’s sincerity, and didn’t want to break the spell by talking too much about what was happening in our world, as opposed to Jane’s. I’ve limited myself mostly to “liking” others’ commentary, or adding my own brief comments without reblogging. But I’m breaking that rule here, so I might as well mention something else I’ve said already in a few places.

I was really impressed by the episode. It was long, and complicated, with the Adele portion at the beginning, the interaction between Jane and Adele and Grace about the fingerpainting, the Jane+Rochester part shown here, and then the final re-entry of Grace and Adele and the opening of the present. And of course, it’s all one take.

I noticed that thing some others have commented on, with the lines seeming a little stilted at times, but I don’t hold that against the show. Besides seeing it as a potentially valid way for the characters to behave in that moment, I consider it in the context of how the show is being made: as a labor of love by a young (in one case, really young) cast and crew, stealing time away from the demands of their lives to create and share this beautiful thing. If they had an extra couple of days for rehearsals and additional takes, I’m sure they could have made the final product even better — but that’s like saying the scene that introduced Rochester would have been better if he’d ridden a motorcycle with Pilot in a sidecar: Why, yes. That’s probably true. And which of us is going to supply this hypothetical motorcycle?

I’ve always been a sucker for a long, unbroken shot. I know creating one is technically demanding, but the result can be so powerful. It removes the artificiality of a cut-together scene, puts the viewer in a real moment. But it’s a high-wire act. They can’t pick and choose from multiple takes, using the best version of each line, tweaking the timing. What you see is what you get. One flub and it’s ruined.

I think about the degree of difficulty of that scene, and I get excited about how awesome the result was. I loved it. I love the ambition of the show’s creators. They’re not just going through the motions. They’re pushing themselves, trying to make something worthy of their love of the material.

I’m so grateful. I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Classic literature vlog adaptations (spreadsheet)

Classic literature vlog adaptations (spreadsheet):

I’ve made some updates to my LBD episodes spreadsheet in the last few days. I broke it out onto separate tabs to make it easier to find things, and added a bunch of video links I’d been accumulating. It now features the following tabs:

  • LBD show (160 videos): All the in-world videos from LBD and spinoffs.
  • LBD event (38 videos): Out-of-world videos, interviews, Q&As, etc. featuring the LBD cast and creators.
  • LBD fanvid (48 videos): Fan edits, parodies, etc.
  • AoJE (9 videos): The Autobiography of Jane Eyre. Kind of my favorite thing these days for combatting post-LBD withdrawal.
  • Sanditon (5 videos): The main in-universe Sanditon episodes.
  • Sanditon Extras (2 videos): Peripheral and out-of-universe Sanditon-related videos. I plan to add the RP videos from Sanditon citizens, but for now it’s just the Q&A that Alexandra, Jay, and Margaret did; along with Sarah’s cool “Tumblr User’s Guide to Reddit”. But I’ll get this fleshed out soon.

I’d like to add additional tabs for other vlog-style adaptations of classic lit; I know there was an Emma, and possibly there are others floating around? Please drop me an ask if you know of one that I could add.

Thanks!

matterofawesome:

Yep…

Apropos of today’s episode’s subject matter toward the end, it looks to me like TFIOS may have been shifted slightly outward on the bookshelf, such that it’s visible from this camera angle, not just from the reverse angle we had briefly in the previous episode.

So the book has been moved recently, presumably by someone who took it out to look at it, then didn’t push it in as far when replacing it on the shelf. I’m going to interpret that to mean that Jane was looking at it. Which makes sense, given some of the information she related toward the end of today’s video. She’s been thinking about childhood cancer, and there’s evidence of that in the room, not just in what she said on-camera.

On having separate tags for in-universe and out-of-universe commentary

Friday, April 12th, 2013

anonsally:

lies:

I think it’s a result of how habituated I’ve become to the particular line that the LBD creators drew between in-world and out-of-world reality that Jane Eyre’s presence on Tumblr, the realism of the videos, and various other aspects of how the story is being told have hit me really hard as feeling much more real than LBD ever did. Which I kind of love. And I can totally understand the impulse of not wanting to mess with that, to just forget about the people behind the scenes creating the show and just go with it.

When Ep. 3 crossed my dash I just reblogged it without commentary, because I wanted everyone to see it, and I didn’t want any out-of-world  thoughts of mine to detract from the mood it created of actual jeopardy, and the sympathy I felt for this poor girl stuck at an abandoned bus stop in the middle of the night questioning her choices.

I know it’s silly to think that the AoJE tag won’t end up featuring lots of meta-analysis and criticism (though I’m kind of enjoying the absence of some of the snarkier stuff that I both loved and ended up actively avoiding with LBD). But I wonder: Would it make sense to try to fork a separate tag associated with the show that is just for in-world commentary, a tag for discussion that doesn’t acknowledge the fictional nature of the show? Could something like that even work?

Heh. Now I’m feeling self-conscious about even tagging this. I don’t want to pollute their creation with my out-of-world ravings. I’m not sure who even follows me among those people who are into the show. But for the hypothetical few of you who do that, or who might find this in the notes on the original post: I’m curious what you think.

Wow. Good idea. I’ve already posted out-of-world thoughts on the AoJE tag (and initially tagged things AJE) and I’m definitely looking forward to discussing stuff about the adaptation and meta stuff and all that with you all. However, I’m also totally excited about experiencing it as if it were nonfiction. I mean, for me those two ways to enjoy it aren’t mutually exclusive, but I can see how they might be for others.

So, maybe it’s a good idea to have a separate tag for in-world commentary,  and I would love to be involved in both tags if we can come up with one that makes sense. Not sure what that would be though.

AoJEmeta for the out-of-world stuff? That would be the tag that Ms. Eyre herself wouldn’t see. But I’m sure someone can come up with something better.

For now I will tag this AoJE… Sorry if anyone doesn’t want to see it, but I do want people who have opinions about this to weigh in!

I kind of think that for the AoJE tag be used for anything other than general commentary would be unlikely to work. It makes sense to me that if some people did want to use a separate tag for in-world commentary, that they’d be willing to do more work to accomplish that, so maybe that tag should be the one that’s longer or less intuitive. But on the other hand, that tag could conceivably host in-world interactions with the show’s characters, and if it was something that called attention to its special nature (if it were #AoJEWorld or something like that), then that would create another problem to account for (“why is Jane using this odd tag, rather than the obvious #AoJE one?”)

I guess it’s inevitable that consumers of this kind of creation have to do some work to maintain the line between real and make-believe, and to actively suspend disbelief and turn a blind eye to anomalies. Like, if eyrequotes is going to tag her posts #AoJE, and if that tag contains lots of out-of-world commentary, I have to be willing to believe that she’s participating only within certain invisible boundaries. It presumably was the desire to maintain a clean line with that that kept the in-world LBD characters largely out of Tumblr, and since I’m loving that Jane is here I have to be willing to accept a certain reality-maintenance effort on my part as part of that.

I just really like what the show’s creators are doing, and how it’s affecting me. It reminds me of the “so many startled butterflies” from aeternamente’s ficlet. It’s like the Autobiography of Jane Eyre is weaving a spell, and I’m falling under it, and I don’t want to do anything that might interfere with it or frighten it away. Including talking about it.

I think I mostly just need to relax. :-)

Will you be making a spreadsheet for AoJE?

Tuesday, April 9th, 2013

I already added the two videos that have appeared so far to the existing LBD videos spreadsheet. I think maybe it would make sense to give AoJE its own tab (“worksheet”), though, so its videos don’t get lost in the LDB stuff.

Lately I’ve added a “type” column, with videos being categorized as:

  • show – actual LBD and spinoff episodes.
  • event – interviews, hangouts, or special videos that feature out-of-character appearances by cast or crew.
  • fan – everything else; mostly fan videos.

I put the AoJE videos in as type “fan”, though that doesn’t really feel right. But “show” would potentially confuse people into thinking it’s actually produced by the LBD team. So I think a separate worksheet is probably the best approach.

here goes nothing (x)

This gif does a nice job of capturing what has been compelling about AoJE  for me so far. It’s not like they’ve done much of the story, or made it clear how they’re going to adapt things, other than a few hints. They obviously lack some of the resources that LBD had. But just from what I’ve seen so far, I know that:

  • They’re fans of LBD.
  • They’re trying to make this visually interesting.
  • They’re able to convey a tone of reflection and thoughtfulness.

Even if the show ends up being disappointing (and I don’t see any reason to think it will), I love that it is approaching things from a different stylistic perspective. Over a year of obsessive LBD-watching, a sense of claustrophobia gradually crept in, relieved on only a few occasions (like The High Life). It was a valid creative choice, and I (obviously) loved the result, but seeing the moving camera in AoJE, the outdoor shots, and the overall visual vocabulary is like stepping into daylight from a dusty room.

It’s not like they are simply recapitulating what LBD did. They’re treating it as a starting point and building on it. I love that.

Tumblr was a set routine for Jane. Scroll, scroll, scroll… oooh, pretty antique camera. Queue it. Scroll, scroll… wow, that’s some awesome architecture against such a tempestuously cloudy sky. I like it (queued).

Even with all the packing and preparing for her new job, she somehow found the time…

It would be kind of fitting if fans of AoJE took to referring to themselves as “butterflies”. Though maybe obscure animal references for a fandom are more trouble than they’re worth, based on past experience.

I’ll just think it to myself for now.
