Sprout Film Festival 2006:

Svefn-G-Englar

9 min. / Music Video / 2001 / Iceland

In Svefn-G-Englar the band delivers nine peaceful minutes of white sheets, emerald grass and a movement-piece by a performance group consisting of several people with Down syndrome. You’ll never see this on MTV.

Directors: August Jacobsson and Sigur Ros

Formed in 1994 Sigur Ros are an Icelandic four-piece band who rapidly shot to international success. Until the release of the single Svefn-G-Englar in 1999, the band had remained unreleased outside of their native country.

[Emphasis mine.]

I remember the first time I heard Svefn-G-Englar. It was during my morning commute, listening to KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic show. I’d heard of Sigur Rós, but that was the first time I really sat up and took notice. Who is that?

Last night in Houston they played the song for the first time during the North American tour. It came slightly before the halfway point in the main set, between Sæglópur and Varúð. I hope they play it in Santa Barbara.
