Quick programming note: I’m departing from my home base for a week in the mountains today. The downside is this that will involve burning profligate amounts of fossil fuels, contributing to the impoverishment of future generations. The upside is that the recent rains after a long drought have caused a spectacular wildflower bloom in the Antelope Valley, Mojave Desert, and Owens Valley areas through which I will be traveling.

Entering robotic probe mode. I shall endeavor to gather imagery and return it to my home planet via remote network protocols.

emilyjeanstone:

Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months. And then, one not-so-very special day, I went to my typewriter, I sat down, and I wrote our story. A story about a time, a story about a place, a story about the people. But above all things, a story about love. A love that will live forever. The End.

Fungus

Please do me a favor and look at the full size of this one, to do it justice.. I may or may not have shrieked “THE TEXTURES!!!” while I was photographing it, which of course was the moment a group of other hikers chose to walk past me. I stand by what I said though.

cool-critters:

Pacific sea nettle (Chrysaora fuscescens)

Thepacific sea nettle is a common free-floating scyphozoa that lives in the East Pacific Ocean from Canada to Mexico. The bell can grow to be larger than one meter (three feet) in diameter in the wild, though most are less than 50 cm across. The long, spiraling, white oral arms and the 24 undulating maroon tentacles may trail behind as far as 10 feet. For humans, its sting is often irritating, but rarely dangerous. They are carnivorous animals. They catch their prey by means of cnidocyst-laden tentacles that hang down in the water. By spreading out their tentacles like a large net, the sea nettle is able to catch food as it passes by. The pacific sea nettle use light sensing organs called ocelli to migrate from the deeper waters of the ocean to the surface.

‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ Showrunner Aline Brosh McKenna Inks Overall Deal With CBS TV Studios

‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ Showrunner Aline Brosh McKenna Inks Overall Deal With CBS TV Studios:

bunchofbloom:

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend co-creator/executive producer Aline Brosh McKenna has signed a two-year overall deal with CBS Television Studios, the studio behind the praised CW musical comedy series. Under the pact, she’ll develop new projects for network and cable through her production company Lean Machine.

McKenna is showrunner on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which she co-created and executive produces with the series’ Golden Globe-winning star, Rachel Bloom. The series already has been renewed for next season, and McKenna and Bloom are at work on the third installment, eyed for next fall.

McKenna is one of the highest-grossing female screenwriters of all time with a combined boxoffice total of over $850 million worldwide for films such as 27 Dresses, Annie and The Devil Wears Prada. In addition to her work in film and television, McKenna is the author of the upcoming graphic novel, Jane, a contemporary version of the Jane Eyre story which will be published this fall by BOOM! Studios. She is repped by CAA.

She’s also famous with me personally for her line in Scriptnotes 231, when she described her reaction to a pivotal scene in Room by saying:

Aline: I was sobbing so loudly. I was barking.

Because I related to that.

Equinox from space

March 20th was the Equinox, the day when the sun is directly above the equator and where the North and South Pole both receive equal amounts of sunlight. For the next 6 months the South Pole will be in shadow and the North Pole will receive sunlight.

The Japanese Himawari-8 weather satellite captured this gif/video view of the Earth moving into night over the Pacific Ocean yesterday; this is just about as closely balanced as the planet can get, with both poles receiving just about the same amount of light.

My latest video on sea level rise in Carpinteria is up now. I had fun making it.

If you’re a fan of Yulin/Zack/Sean/Mary Kate’s beautiful video of Auden’s “As I Walked Out One Evening”, you’ll recognize where I got my inspiration.
