Golden-crowned Kinglet–FINALLY!, Oakton, Virginia, October 30, 2016

In my quest to photograph the Golden and Ruby crowned Kinglets which have happily been feasting in my backyard, I have learned a lot about the foraging behavior/identification considerations for these small frenetic birds.  Mostly, the almost hummingbird like pace of especially the Yellow-crowned Kinglets requires diligence and patience in order to get a photo which is more than a streak across the lens or a wavering branch, indicating the recently departed:)

Also, I would like to offer a shout out (if that is still a thing) to http://ift.tt/xOqJjh for being as good as he seems on paper (or, at least, in his Tumblr posts:), as although we have never met, he is consistently willing to be generous with both his time and his copious amounts of knowledge….offering advice and answering questions…without making this birding novice feel like a complete and unequivocal, well, novice….

Aww, thanks. :-) And nice photos of these quick-twitching birds.

By Your Side – A Poe Party Fanfic

Sunday, December 25th, 2016

koltarmi:

Hello @lies , it is I, your Poe Party Secret Santa. I am so sorry for the late reveal. I’ve just come back from a trip where I tried to upload your present, but was unable to do so because of the terrible wifi connection. How was your Christmas? Did yo get to see lots of birds?

I hope you enjoy your present, I had a lot of fun writing it.

Read it on AO3.

Prompt: Edgar’s truest friend

Death has followed Edgar every step of his life.

He didn’t know know why he was foolish enough to believe it ever left him.

The warm water in the basin had long turned cold, but he kept scrubbing and submerging his pruned fingers back into the cold water. Despite them being spotless, he could still feel the slick of Eddie’s blood staining them.

After another half hour scratching at his skin, his hands were red and raw. He sat silently in the study, his eyes flickering from the floorboards to the empty chair across the study.

Thank you! This is wonderful!

October 4, 2016 – Worm-eating Warbler (Helmitheros vermivorum)

Breeding in forests of eastern North America, these warblers winter in Central America and the Caribbean. They eat a variety of arthropods, especially caterpillars, picking them from the leaves of low shrubs. Nesting on the ground, they build cups of skeletonized leaves lined with moss. Females typically stay on the nest when threatened, even remaining until they are touched. They then act helpless, fluttering with their wings and tails spread, in an attempt to distract predators. Chicks leave the nest around eight to ten days after they hatch.

I can agree with most people that the live-action Grinch is far from a great movie, but this scene always kills me.

FUNNY BIT OF TRIVIA ABOUT THIS SCENE.

When the Grinch yanks the tablecloth away, everything on the table was supposed to fall. But Jim Carrey did it so expertly, all of the objects stayed right where they were! So the Grinch running back and messing everything up was improvised by Jim =)

“Put Your Sad Down” – School of Seven Bells

I know you gotta, you gotta be on your own
Who left you wanting, wanting to fall in love
That’s alright cause all that I wanna do
Is make you forget, forget that you feel so bad
Give your heart a second to find the will again
Put your sad down
And tonight just feel with your body

And tonight just feel with your body

Put your sad down
And tonight just feel with your body
Put your sad down

So baby no pressure
I’m just talking pleasure

And tonight just feel with your body
So baby no pressure
I’m just talking pleasure
So baby no pressure
I’m just talking pleasure
So baby no pressure
I’m just talking pleasure
And tonight just feel with your body
So baby no pressure
I’m just talking pleasure
So baby no pressure, put your sad down
I’m just talking pleasure
So baby no pressure
I’m just talking pleasure
And tonight just feel with your body

So baby no pressure
I’m just talking pleasure
So baby no pressure
I’m just talking pleasure
So baby no pressure
I’m just talking pleasure
So baby no pressure
I’m just talking pleasure
So baby no pressure
I’m just talking pleasure

I know you gotta, you gotta be on your own
Who left you wanting, wanting to fall in love
That’s alright cause all that I wanna do
Is make you forget, forget that you feel so bad
Give your heart a second to find the will again
Put your sad down
And tonight just feel with your body

“Every technology embodies the values of the age in which it was created. When the atomic bomb was…”

Saturday, December 24th, 2016

“Every technology embodies the values of the age in which it was created. When the atomic bomb was being developed in the mid-nineteen-forties, the destruction of cities and the deliberate targeting of civilians was just another military tactic. It was championed as a means to victory. The Geneva Conventions later classified those practices as war crimes—and yet nuclear weapons have no other real use. They threaten and endanger noncombatants for the sake of deterrence. Conventional weapons can now be employed to destroy every kind of military target, and twenty-first-century warfare puts an emphasis on precision strikes, cyberweapons, and minimizing civilian casualties. As a technology, nuclear weapons have become obsolete. What worries me most isn’t the possibility of a cyberattack, a technical glitch, or a misunderstanding starting a nuclear war sometime next week. My greatest concern is the lack of public awareness about this existential threat, the absence of a vigorous public debate about the nuclear-war plans of Russia and the United States, the silent consent to the roughly fifteen thousand nuclear weapons in the world. These machines have been carefully and ingeniously designed to kill us. Complacency increases the odds that, some day, they will. The “Titanic Effect” is a term used by software designers to explain how things can quietly go wrong in a complex technological system: the safer you assume the system to be, the more dangerous it is becoming.”

anonsally:

I’ve posted about the wallpaper already, but here are some more aspects of the decor of the vacation rental that require some comment.

Top row: light fixture and floor lamp in the living room. I genuinely like these, though I would prefer the hanging lamp in a different color.

Second row: rather uncomfortable orange naugahyde couch. There are chairs and recliners in a similar style, but the chairs are pink and faded and the recliners are a completely different shade of dark red.

Third row: upstairs hallway light fixture, which I also like, and a vintage blender in avocado green.

Fourth to sixth rows: glassware and cutlery that I sincerely love.

Oh wow. My mom had that flatware. I totally associate that design with weekend/vacation trips to visit her in the late 60s/early 70s.

start

I’ve always really liked this part, sailing around close to the other boats, much closer than you would under normal circumstances. It gets more serious as the start approaches, but this part, when everyone is milling around, checking out the wind, the time, the other boats. I don’t know. I just like it.
