In which I’m not obsessing, I swear

I’m gonna try to take a break from election obsessing today. I’m going birdwatching and/our pokemoning; later I get to go to the opera. If I try just a little I can get to Monday without thinking about it hardly at all, and then there’s just one day more and we can all exhale.

But first there’s this: “the polls are rigged!” Which (like all the rest) is the obvious over-the-top twisting of reality to coddle his fragile narcissistic ego. Though there was always the fear that he could be right, in a sense. Because the polls ARE rigged. They’re weighted and sampled and have assumptions based on prior experience baked in; that’s the only reason they work.

But this election is different enough that those assumptions are on shaky ground. His supporters are different from the last election’s voters and the one before that. Maybe they are so motivated that they will turn out in huge numbers, overwhelming the pollsters’ algorithms.

There are signs, though, that the opposite is happening. In key battleground states, early voting numbers are up – way up – in two groups in particular: women and Latinos. After the dust settles the story of this election may turn out to be that the polls were rigged – but in his favor. And that by being SO awful, so blatantly racist and misogynist, he motivated those two groups to turn out in historic fashion, generating a wave that swept him away like the insubstantial flotsam he is.

Two more days.
