Actually I have a question! How do you balance having four-five main characters in a scene at once? Especially in a POV. I always feel the need to be locating each of them and to show all of their reactions to everything. Not exactly smooth writing.

Dear thisisahootingowl,

One of my absolute favorite painters is John Singer Sargent, and this — “El Jaleo” — is one of my favorite paintings of his:

It’s a painting full of a lot of people but really only about one person. When I’m writing scenes with a large cast, I try to keep paintings like this in mind. The important relationships and plot arcs are given the most detail and the greatest contrast. Everything else is a blurred and supporting ensemble, arranged beautifully and subtly to emphasize the true subject.
