The Southern Cross in a Southern Sky
Carlos Fairbairn

Have you ever seen the Southern Cross? This famous constellation is best seen from Earth’s Southern Hemisphere. Captured from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the four bright stars that mark the Southern Cross are visible just above the horizon in the featured image. On the left of this constellation, also known as The Crux, is the orange star Gamma Crucis. The band of stars, dust, and gas rising through the middle of the image mosaic is part our Milky Way Galaxy. Just to the right of the Southern Cross is the dark Coal Sack Nebula, and the bright nebula at the top of the image is the Carina Nebula. The Southern Cross is such a famous constellation that it is depicted on the national flag of Australia.

Carrie Fisher hiding in the trash cans on the backlot of the Star Wars set.

I’m reblogging this because once Star Wars comes out and Carrie Fisher starts turning up on talk shows again, you all are going to need it.

I want a Sesame Street segment in which she and Oscar the Grouch discuss bipolar disorder.

Original trash princess.

I just realized I’ve survived everything I’ve ever encountered in life. I have a 100% survival rate. I’m fucking nailing it.

Not only that, but every ancestor of yours dating back to the first clump of proto-life that emerged from non-living matter has successfully reproduced without dying first. So not only are you fucking nailing it, you’re heir to a legacy of ass-kicking that dates back billions of years.

“Ophelia”, watercolour on aquarelle paper, by

mary-paints

This piece draws on the character Ophelia from Hamlet. It is part of a series of
portraits based on literary characters, in which symbols are extracted or
derived from the original text in order to capture the characters’ identities.
Through this, the series explores the role symbols play in literature while
also highlighting the way in which one’s experiences, in this case, one’s
literary experiences, shape one’s perceptions of other works of art.

The Christmas count is coming, and I need to have my Cooper’s-vs.-Sharp-shinned differences down. We mostly get the former, but occasionally one of these guys, too. So: note the absence of head projection.

The case for starting sex education in kindergarten

The case for starting sex education in kindergarten:

primarybufferpanel:

THIS. THIS is what we need, America. THIS.

Seven year olds can properly name the genitilia that they have, as well as the genitles others have.

Eleven year olds know that girls can like girls and boys can like boys and that its even okay to like neither, or both, or multiple.

Thirteen year olds know what a condom is and how to say no when someone wants to kiss but you don’t.

This is AMAZING. I want THIS! I would LOVE to have this education and openess in my life.

Telling a group of teenagers to wait until they’re married is:

a) not going to do /shit/, did you really think they were going to listen to you

and

b) none of your FUCKING business, I’m gonna have a post coming up about this so stay tuned.

This is what sexual education is about. This is what it needs to consist of. This is what I wish I had learned.

Take note, America, because you’re doing a really shitty job.

(W)

Not to mention that this method has been proven to reduce the amount of childhood sexual abuse that occurs. By teaching children what consent means, that no one has the right to touch you without permission, children are more likely to report sexual abuse and to recognize it.

My country fucks up on plenty of things but this is not one of them

And my country fucks up on plenty of things, but this is definitely up there as one of the worst.

#SERIOUSLY#WORLD BUILDING#YOU ARE SO USED#TO your vehicle being ON FIRE that you have built something into it#to use the excessive sand of your environment#to make it NO LONGer on fire#oh my god  (via whisperingkuiperbelt)

World building is a bitch, but totally worth it

But impractical. TWo supercharged engines and the intake were both in the path of the sand blast. I am under the impression that the blowers are roots type and cannot be turned off, so this would have dumped large quantities of sand into the engine.

The intakes have covers that close. If I’m not mistaken, you see them close at the beginning of this scene.

I don’t remember them showing them close, but they show them open at the end of the sequence. I gif’d the re-opening, but then decided not to include it in the original set:

I don’t know anything about engines and whether or not this would actually be workable in real life, but it worked for me as fun movie-magic.

I’ve fucked up: work edition

neither-saint-nor-sinner:

So, as the lowest of the low (aka, the youngest and newest employee) in the office, I don’t get a desk of my own. I get a corner of someone else’s desk. Actually, I share a desk with one of clerks of court. Not even the clerk for the courtroom I work in but the clerk of a different judge entirely. This is fun because people like to come up to the window while said clerk is gone and ask me clerk-y things because I’m sitting at the desk clearly labelled “Courtroom A4″ and so I would know, probably, except I am a) not a clerk of court b) an idiot generally c) blissfully unaware of anything going on in SOMEONE ELSE’S courtroom.

I’d already seen this story on Twitter, and I have to say, in all seriousness, this is exactly why I will always prefer Tumblr. Because this version of the story was _way_ better.
